Opinions required. 1875 Army Outlaw - Uberti

Post by Coop 45 »

I'm thinking about getting into single action shooting. I've already got a Rossi 92 in 45 colt as well as a stoeger coach gun. The thing I'm missing is the revolvers. I'd like something a bit different and have been looking at the 1875 outlaws in 45 colt that Uberti is making. However being in Australia there is no way I can look at or handle these in person so I need a bit of help. If anyone has any experience of these can they tell me what they think.

Greetings
Have held more than one and my opinion has always been it was to heavy. That fin on the bottom of the barrel adds weight beyond a "good balance". If you have access to a Ruger Old Army or a Colt Dragoon #3 remove the loading lever and you will get the idea.
That is one of the reasons the original Remington model did not sell like the Colt 1873. It was a good revolver but no longer had the top strap advantage over the Colts. Just a useless weight hanging under the barrel. But if you were in the need to "barrel whip" a few fellers off and on it would keep the barrel from bending generally.

As Mike mentions there's a reason why things tend to develop and refine the way they do.
The early Ruger Single Actions for example were built for durability and were stout as heck. A great hunting weapon and capable of firing modern hunting loads but considered by the Cowboy Action crowd to be too heavy and ill balanced. Overkill for the powder puff loads typical in such competition and most especially for the blanks used in some of the reenactments. Eventually Ruger listened and the newer models offer a lighter weight variation in a more Colt like profile. Some of us may consider that a mixed blessing.

Fist things to ask yourself is what do you WANT and if being different is enough reason to compromise on what may be a better fit and feel in your hand. Personally I very much prefer the Bisley grip over the plow handle. Eventually I may have to get a single action or four.

Something you might consider is if there's a meet you can go to you might be able to talk to some of the participants and they might even let you examine their toys if that's legal where you are at.

Thanks for the answers so far. I'm 6'4" so I don't mind if they are a bit on the heavy side. I know a few people who could benefit from a good pistol whipping or two so that may help. I do have fairly big hands so I'm wondering if the grips on these will fit my hands properly. Mechanically how well do they function?

I bought a Uberti 1873 from Bud's a couple of months ago. https://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/pro ... +.45LC+5.5
That is the one I have. If you have big hands you might want something with Army sized grips. My hands are not really that big, a little more grip length would be nice.
This one shoots Very nice groups at 50ft. it hit exactly where you are aiming. Wish I had another.
I don't shoot cowboy action, just needed a SA and can not afford a "real" colt SA.

Being a big feller does change things. You need to go to a good shop and hand try all you can. Remember grips can be found that are fatter. Smaller grips fit my little mutts better.

Our second son is 6'-4" also and thinks the ROA is almost right. A #3 dragoon to him is a good size revolver. So far the only revolver he has held and thought a might large is the Walker.
He really liked a BFR 475 Linbaugh .
