I have this project, Kinda think use the barrel for a door prop, it's a 1 in 48 twist, I think it was an 80's thing.
What good is a 1 in 48? Only got one wedge pin,,,,Real short stock.
If I had four I could use em for table legs. 15/16" across the flats.
It seems to shoot balls OK, it's a real short barrel, 28" so it's got no distance, my boy says it's accurate, like a circuit judge, kinda short, hits OK up to 99 yards at best.
Anybody know of a good use for it?
Or new barrel time, New sites, Parkerized, ,, Any body ever seen a short squirrel gun?

Re: 1 in 48 Black Powder thing
If I remember correctly the 1 in 48 twist was meant to be a compromise rifling that would allow both patched ball and the early slugs like TC's "maxi-ball". Being a compromise they were neither fish nor fowl, but they did work and the TC's brought a lot folks into muzzle loading. Were I inclined I probably think a Hawken like for close up woods hunting.

Greetings
You could ream it out to a 60 some caliber smooth bore. Those are fun BP shooters. go out and pop wabbits in the morning and fire up big critters with round ball.
What caliber is it anyway ? A caliber 50 RB is getting pretty tuckered out at 100 yards for popping big deer. A 54 would be a little better. But them conicals still have a good "thwap" to them at 100.

Its a 50, just a short 28" barrel, I been thinking about trying a maxi ball thing or something.(conical)Missionary wrote:Greetings

28" just isn't enough barrel to launch things fast enough. 50 cal ball marginal for big critters, what you said.
If I rebarrel it I will put a Colerain Barrel Gain Twist in a smaller bore, and convert it to a flint lock, sqirril gun?
I saw a guy shooting a 62 cal smooth bore today, 44" barrel flint lock, ffg
I want to build a conical rifle, fast twist 45 cal, 36".
My other rifle came with a real barrel, 34" It sends a ball through a 5 gallon bucket at 265 yards.
2600 fps 50 cal 171 grn. 100 grns fffg, I killed a deer with it across a canyon, 200 yard shot.
I wore that barrel out.
My new gun I built is a ball gun too, it max's out at 175 yard' Colerain Gain Twist barrel tack driver, it's 36" 80 max grns fffg, I haven't chronny'd this one, I know its not the velocity of that other barrel, but its more accurate.
Just not sure what I could use that 1 in 48 twist for,
