Never Ever Buy Simmons Rings!

Post by vvllbs »

Well I had a little stash of nice rimfire rings and gave them to an employees son when he got his first .22. Picked up a few 22’s this year for myself and all I could find in town were Simmons. The heads strip out with no strength at all. They would have never stood a chance with my Wheeler Fat Wrench. These are worse than those five dollar Daisy rings. Absolutely terrible! Had to drill the heads off! Image

Bought a .30-30 Winchester off a fellow who brought it into the shop.
Told him what I'd pay.
He said 'With the scope?'
I said 'With or without the scope the price is the same'
'Would you take the scope off for me at that price?'
'Sure, I can do that.'
Lucky for me, since that Simmons scope package was merely loosely tightened on. It'd have stripped out and bashed anyone shooting it in the eye first shot. Wasn't evident it was loose until I got to the mount screws.

I get crap for using 'heavy' and 'expensive' mounts and rings but I know I can count on them.

Hey I know this is a bit of an old post.......And maybe these are junk or maybe they were overtightened. I'm familiar with 'similar' clamps, on bicycle and motorcycle handlebars for mounting accessories, etc as well as at work for cable retention, etc. That looks like plain aluminum, one half with clearance holes and the other half tapped (threaded). Now you are probably using steel or stainless steel fasteners, probably socket head cap screws to boot, and an allen wrench for tightening. Its very easy for that steel screw to strip the aluminum especially if it does not have a steel helical-coil (or helicoil as commonly referred to...) threaded insert. And I doubt they do. Additionally you can bend, deform, and break the 'ears' on the clamp with over torque (I know, I've done it.....). You cannot go very tight on these, and to assure your fastener does not back out since there is no way you can assure that with properly torquing it (w/o the aforementioned damage potential) - I'd use thread locking compound (often called 'loctite')....

Yeah, you CAN possibly get away with using raw aluminum rings...on a lightly recoiling .22LR.
I've seen a lot of cheap optics shaken to death by the little .22LR however.

BUT if you are using Warne rings (or a half dozen other brands of real rings) for example you wont have this problem.
