The staining from the Watco definitely brings out the grain. Very nice looking.

After re-working my own stock recently, my guess is that this "mystery wood" is most likely Mersawa or, possibly, Meranti. They are both a light hardwood of moderate strength that grow in Malaysia, Indonesia, Southeast Asia and all the way up to India. They export the dickens out of this stuff. It is cheap and readily available.

It does have a grain that resembles some species of Mahogany and can be very attractive if finished properly. Using paste wood filler prior to staining and finishing will make it glass smooth.

I recently exchanged comments on Facebook with a guy claiming to have lots of experience with exotic woods, and he says he believes his Rossi is stocked with wood called Tabebuia Rosea. Says he's worked with a lot of it and swears that's what it is.

Ok, so I Googly'd it, looks plausible to me.....

According to medicinal uses, if I get constipated I can always eat my rifle stock. +corn

Medicinal uses
Preparations of the bark of the tree are consumed to eliminate intestinal parasites, malaria and uterine cancer. A decoction of the bark is recommended for anemia and constipation.

I think somebody needs to take a saliva swab from their stock and submit it to Ancestry.com, so we can settle this question once and for all.

I just ordered some ren. wax from Midway. The 7 oz jar is on sale. With shipping and NRA round up the total was $30.
