Lower tang extremely tight

Post by leverguy357 »

Is it ok to file the lower tang tenon that slides into the mortise on the receiver? It is Sooo tight. Really slows the assembly of the firearm because you can't easily line up all the holes for the lower tang, hammer and receiver at the same time if you can't easily slide the lower tang in and out. I have seen youtube videos where they disassemble and reassemble in 4 minutes. They encounter no friction between the lower tang and the receiver.

Also, on disassembly just curious why the lower tang is not step 1 since it is the final step on assembly. What happened to last in first out? Whenever I take out the ejector stop pin first (like most people do in the videos) I always have trouble getting the lever out. So now I just remove the lower tang first. What am i missing?

I wouldn't file it. I would use tooth paste on tight tolerances to loosen it or polish the contact points and see if that helps. Any polishing compound will work but toothpaste is cheap and relatively safe to use.

I'm with AK, but we are not present to see exactly how tight a fit you are talking about. I assume that you are examining the fit with the lower tang off the receiver, just it and the stock. If the fit is so bad that installation might split the stock, then yes you are going to need to do something. Just remember whatever you take off, cannot be put back, so you are going to need to work slowly and keep the sides uniform so that it looks right once installed. I would rather work the tang than work on the stock.

Not following you on the last paragraph, once take the pin out of the bolt, on all five of my rifles the lever with the locking bolts strip right out of the receiver. No effort at all.

No issue with the stock. Just the lower tang trigger assembly and the receiver. It's so tight i had to build a jig to hold the receiver stable while i wiggle out the lower tang. I have an older Rossi, probably late 70's.

Not sure why my lever hangs up when I try to remove it first. It's weird. I now have two Rossi 92's and was going to try some experimentation with springs, etc. Have you done some different things with the five you have? Just curious.

Also, to Akuser47 thank you for the tooth paste suggestion. Sounds like a safe way to go.

All my R92s have the GunSlinger springs for the light triggers and are configured as scout rifles.

My old one is stiff too. Don't take that out of context.

That's pretty funny! I just ordered a Lyman pull scale. I would like to do some testing of the lever resistance before and after changing out the springs and polishing. Has anyone done any such testing? I have two Rossi's a Uberti and a Winchester to start with.
