Didn't get as much of the original color off as I usually do so I skipped that pic. I am out of stripper and don't wanna buy any right now so I got some gasket remover from work that smells the same. Took some color off. Not a lot. I'm going darker anyway so it doesn't matter much. Sanded lightly with fine Scotch-Brite only. More pics later as the stain is set for now.

First go round with the ebony stain.



It was waaaay too thin (old stash of stain) so I flipped the can over a while and used the solids to re-do it darker. No pics of that.

Here's after the second DARK coat of stain.



After this I used one more coat of ebony then one coat of dark walnut.



Now the color is close enough to the SRC92 it's time for the next step. Going to put a couple light coats of clear urethane on them to get the texture and final color match. I will wait several days though because I want to keep hand rubbing the stain as it "de-solevnts" and leeches out of the wood.

Just a casual observation. I wouldn't walk around my shop in
stocking feet ... no telling what kind of splinters I'd end up
with.

I would say your there or close once you put your varnish or oil on it it will be darn sexy. Nice work gas.
Did you wire hang them it looks as if you did from the grip screw holes wax haveing tiny holes. That's how I hang mine to cure last time I finished small grips. Unless that's just stain.

I will hang them by wire for urethane. I haven't yet, wax melted from the hot chick <insert funny pause> lamp I put on them to "outgas" the stain.

I always have to shake the heck out of stain to get the solids re-dissolved.

I've got to do a bench later this month or early next month.
I hope the polyurethane will have enough hardener in it to actually set up.
I almost always rag wipe stains and brush on varnish. Last time I did book cases the varnish available refused to set up unless applied in microscopic thin coats. Bloody California Air Resource Board ought to be forced to paint their floors with the stuff and live with it for at least a month.

I don't shake stain because the directions say not to. I'm not sure it matters. Should be ready for urethane this weekend.

I think the stir not shaken is to keep air bubbles out.
