Y'all inspired me and I had an extra 17 minutes so I did the final prep for urethane. Used some worn out 400 grit and a light touch followed by a wipe down.

With varnish it matters. With hand rubbed stain I'm not so sure it matters especially if you are shaking it to mix it and then allow the bubbles to dissipate before applying it, once you get it mixed it doesn't separate out as fast and simple stirring tends to remix it easier.

Varnish on the other hand will retain the bubbles for quite a while longer than I want to wait AND if you get air in it then you are more likely to get it kicking off in the can.

Finally got around to hanging these up and spraying some satin clean urethane. It was pretty cold in the garage so I have a small space heater and a chicken light out there. No, there is no danger of fire or explosion.

might dry faster if you tie 'em to the weed whacker string and give 'em a twirl. of course, you also might have to pull 'em out of the walls that way.

Brass nut and ferrule came in. Medallions I ordered were not as described. New, much more expensive pair on the way.
