What will remove Tru-Oil?

Post by Deleted User 2964 »

Bought an old Stevens SxS 12 ga with a bad Tru-Oil finish. I would like to redo it. But I have never tried to remove an old finish of Tru-Oil. I have some Zip Strip and some Citrus Strip. Anyone have any experience with this?

Purple Power is a good stock stripper, I do them in the bathtub so I can soak, scrub, wash, rinse & cleanup easily. Used to used Dawn Power Dissolver, which was awesome, but they stopped making it.

SixGun
You can use either of the strippers you mention. I strip stocks in the deep sink in the basement, and usually do it twice. Be sure to rinse the stock good, and dry it off with paper towels after, let it dry good.

There's some stuff Brownells sell, I believe it's called Whiting that is used to de-oil stocks before repair or refinish. Don't know if it would do Tru-oil but a quick call to there tech guys would get and answer one way or another.

I would just steel wool it down to bare wood and re-tru-oil it. The pores in the wood are already filled, and if you strip the stock you will have to re-fill them.

OK lots of options. I would also like to stain it darker than what it is now. What method y'all think would work better?
Thanks
