Okie

Ahh, I have the 30 and 357 herret barrels for my contender. I had not even thought about trying it in them. I rarely shoot them anymore, most of the time when I do, it's because the guys I'm shooting with have never even heard of a contender before.
I'll be getting with you later about that 357 B&D. I have wanted one since reading about them back in the early 70s. I'm getting close now, to being able to make my own.

Ugly to some maybe, but I can see you were after it working like you wanted it to and beauty was not a factor. I'm like that, I want it to work first, then I "might" make it pretty later. But probably not!

OK I got the 357 B&D and 357 mag cylinder. But what's the other one chambered for?

10" custom barrel? you must be able to get 158 grain bullets up to 1500fps or better. Did you do the work?

You did not comment back about my hardening method. I'm new and rough at this stuff, so I don't know all the particulars about the process. And I do tend to not worry alot about the particulars either.

Don, other cylinder is a nine, was sold to me as a 357 when I was gathering parts for the project and I just kept it as is. Barrel was a take off 357 Max found at Reeder's Custom Guns. A friend set the shoulder back so I could get the barrel-cylinder gap set. I found a reamer and Bisley cylinder then ran across this cylinder already reamed and ready to go. I'll dig up some chrono numbers later.

Meanwhile a teaser of what is in the thinking stage. I need to find another 357 Mag Contender barrel to be able to proceed.

357/445 super mag with a bain and davis 10 degree shoulder? I like the longer neck. Looks to be trimmed back a little too?

Those look to be NOEs version of ranch dogs 190 grain bullet with normal grease grooves?

BTW. I just got back from shooting the 360. a 158 JSP @ 2000+ FPS was easy peasy

Bullet on the left is a 360-200 BRP, 360-230 RF RD on right.

Yes a 445 ran in the B&D die.

I have some 360 brass, my 357 Mag won't chamber it.

360 wont chamber in your 357 ....rossi? It shouldn't, but why do you say that?

Did you miss the part where I made a reamer and reamed mine out to fit the 360?

I had thought about using the 445 brass trimmed back to 1.450 inches, and then sized down to 357 in the neck. Only I like the 30 degree angle shoulder instead of the long B&D shoulder. More like the bobcat 357/44.

I went and shot the 360 today and got some chrono readings on the velocity.

I shot some normal 357 magnums across it first to lay down a base line to work from. I had some 158 gr JSP bullets, H110 powder at 15.5 grains 1513 fps. That's a pretty good load and right up there at the top with H110. You could prob go a little more but I figured this was a good baseline.

All of these 360 loads were made using 300MP powder 158 grain magtech JSP bullets and a CCI standard primer. I used a good heavy roll crimp on everything jacketed and cast.

I started off at 19.0 grains of powder cause the 357 mag uses 18.6, and with the 360s greater capacity, I knew this would be in the ballpark for a good start, but if anything a little on the low side. I was right as it made a lot of noise and flash and I could tell the pressure was to low, and I was getting incomplete burn. Velocity was still ok but SD was bad bad.

19.0 MP300............1676 fps
19.5 ..................1735 still booming
20.0....................1770 getting better
20.5.................... 1835 only one of five did the boom/flash
21.0.....................1901 Now we're getting there, sounds right much quieter, and the cases are a lot cleaner. Making enough pressure to seal better. FPS and SD are looking good. 23SD.
21.5.....................1932
22.0.....................2010  I like it!
22.5.....................2050 A lot less increase in FPS so I must be close to the top, Primers still looking ok. but that's as high as I loaded. Dernit, I think there is a little more so I'll jack it up a little more next time.

2050 is hauling azz though for a 357. And that's in my 16 inch barrel too. I wish I had a 24" to try. I bet it would have gotten close to 2200. If it only gains 15fps per inch, that would almost get me there.

So then I tried a few other things

180gr sierria FPJ match and 17.5 gr 300mp
1538 FPS but had a 9.1 SD this load was way low, but shows a lot of promise. More of this one later to come.

then I tried some 110 jhp and 20.0 grains of lilgun. That did not work, not nearly enough powder and it sounded awful. 1739 FPS and a 242 SD. Yeah, I'll have to up that one a bunch.

Then I tried a cast bullet. Lyman 358156 GC and 20.0 gr 300MP 1960 FPS this one seemed ok.

Next up I tried some 38 specials. 358311 lyman and 3.3 grains of bullseye. That was a change. It felt like I was shooting a bb gun.850 FPS and the SD was 9.79 the lowest of anything I shot.
And this was when I got the first FTF. It shot a couple and then it flipped the next round out right behind the empty. It did that 3 times in 20 rounds. I have a pretty wide gap between the guides because of trimming and polishing. The other day when I measured it there was .020"+ clearance between the cartridge and the guides. That's to much, so I made a .005 shim and put behind the right guide, and that helped a little. But I need to make another shim and close the gap up a little more. That will make it stop I bet ya.

This 360 is looking like it might be worthwhile for someone that wants a little more out of their 357.

Great data. Waiting for Okie's answer to one question I can probably guess on.
