Re: Stock Refinishing, A Start
Things are looking up !
I really have to wonder what kind of wood that is
Couple more days and I should start trying to remove the fore stock. Wish me luck.

That is looking really nice. Are you lightly sanding the "finings" into the pores between coats?

Yep, very lightly, then another coat of Tung Oil, let dry for twenty-four hours.mr surveyor wrote:Jim

Re: Stock Refinishing, A Start
That looks much better with the stain off and some oil on it.
I took mine down last night in anticipation of starting it tonight. I had no issue removing the forend, screw looked good and the band does not appear to be distorted. I am going to soak and brush them tonight and start sanding and oiling the following day.
Hopeing that the forend goes back on the same way.

Good for you ethang !
My past efforts failed trying to back the screw out. Some horror stories
about the screw breaking and or threads stripped so I gave in and put
the project on the back burner.
All most ready to start again, been applying some Liquid Wrench in
the hope it will seep in and help.
Couple more coats of Tung Oil on the butt stock and I think I'll be done,

Re: Stock Refinishing, A Start
I read the horror stories and was put off also, maybe the newest one have been improved.
Mine immediately after placing in the hot water. I think it would have been much more stain coming off if I had not removed so much with the wet paper towels.
they are drying nicely. Hoping the colors will match up

If you haven't finished the "project" yet, try the paper coffee filters for the wipe down. You may be pleasantly surprised

Paper Coffee Filters ... hmm, I can do that !
All I have to do is find them, been years since we "brewed" coffee.
Enjoying a cuppa instant right now.
ethang ... you' er looking good !
Later guys when I'm fully awake. Had the ultrasound yesterday, tried coaxing
the nurse to give me an opinion, good, bad or ? Wouldn't do it naturally but since
no bells or whistles went off, no ambulance ride to the heart center, I suppose
it wasn't terribly bad. Didn't see the doc.
