Happy Thanksgiving Riflemen!

Post by Ranch Dog »

Hope you get to do what you want to do today! Mine will involve a little reloading this morning as I putz around waiting for company to leave and another group show up. Then when everyone settles in to watch a game, I'm going hunting!

Thanks Michael and the same to you and all the board members too. Mostly waiting to leave home and get to one of my daughters for dinner, the traditional Thanksgiving dinner in a log home in the woods. Probably won't be back home before evening so no shooting, hunting or loading today.

On Monday Mike has a bank appraisal on that property he's buying and that will be the last hurdle to overcome. Meanwhile deer season opens on Monday so there is much apprehension in the air.

Seems to be taking you some time to put the tag on a buck. I trust you're seeing some but passing. I wish we could be as selective as you unfortunately that is not the case as we just don't get to look at many bucks.

Happy Thanksgiving to all!

Good to hear from you Frank and it sounds like you have had a good day. Yes, I am taking it slow. My targets are quite specific and they are hard to keep up with in daylight hours. I've killed enough deer that I'm mainly interested in two specific bucks on the property, both 6 1/2 years old and well into the 160s. The odds are not in my favor but I like that as these guys have learned to live their life in darkness. Funny too, as they have experienced very little pressure in their lives. I did have a hunter shoot at one of the 10 pts working a doe. He stopped to pull some berries off a desert yaupon and the guy missed the 140 yard shot but he was very rattled as he had never seen such a large buck. Also understand that these are "texanus" whitetails, and in the southern extent of their range they are not large critters. The live weight of the largest buck ever taken on my place is around 160 pounds. That means that when you see a buck in the 150" to 160" range, they are all antler. Quite impressive.

Happy Thanksgivng to all from MT. We had a good morning at the range with my son & SIL. SIL had never shot a pistol so we rectified that situation.
