1986 Diamond Back Cool Streak

This was my most extensive build, most expensive build, most fun build, most satisfying build.

I did my best to make it look original buying parts I could afford. I know the Pott's mod is not original but it seemed like it fit the era. Frame and fork bought here in great survivor shape. That's all I started with.

Also got these items from the Museum:

Correct Sugino stem restored at home
Correct seat with original prism emblem and metallic lettering on the side restored at home
Correct Skyway OE wheels restored at home
Dia-Compe 890 calipers restored at home
Correct Dia-Compe Tech 6 levers restored at home
Chrome bottom bracket
Correct %@*&$ black and white grips restored at home

The following came from eBay:

Correct 165mm one piece crank and sprocket restored at home
Correct Suntour seat clamp restored at home
Original NBL stickered bars
New Skyway brand front axle and bearing kit (originals missing)
New Tioga Beartrap 2 Headset
NOS black rat trap pedals
NOS wheel reflectors
NOS front & rear reflectors and brackets

The following came from Porckchop BMX

New white cable kit
New chrome Dia-Compe cable guides
New chro-mo seat post
New brake pads
New wheel nuts
New dice valve caps
Reproduction seat guts
Nickel and white KMZ chain
Flite donuts
Kenda Comp ST copy 20 X 1.75 skinwalls

The wheels were tan when I got them. I had to whiten them using 40 Volume co consentrated peroxide gel used at the beauty parlor. Same technique used on the original and hard to find grips and seat. The seats were slightly yellow when new as shown in sales ads of the day.

ORIGINAL TEAL PAINT AND STICKERS!!

The reflectors on the wheels and the pedals were the hardest to find besides the bars that still had stickers.

I kept a spread sheet on this one the first number is a six. Don't tell my wife.

Pretty Sweet.

My first bike was one my Uncle 'rescued' and then brought back to life.
I loved it.
Couldn't tell you all the details now as to gear ratio and whatnot but the wheels were 20" wire spoked, black frame with chromed high bars a banana seat that was white on the sides and black down the middle with a chromed sissy bar. The frame had a couple curved accent bars either side of the top tube as I recall. Standard for the time coaster rear brake and no rim or hand brakes of any kind. As I recall when I got it the pedals were rubber block type.

Took me a while to get halfway decent riding it.

Archer, sounds like a Schwinn Stingray or copy.

Similar.
IF it was a Schwinn the badging was long gone.
It was 20" on both ends and no low rider suspension/tiny tire.
I want to say that it did have the fenders now that I think about it but no chain guard.
I added a chain guard more to keep my jeans from getting caught than anything else.
The sissy bar was another foot to 16" or so beyond the seat.

It was a darned good bike and lighter and faster than a lot of the pseudo BMX rides that came out a little later that most of my friends ended up with. Not too many quality bikes among the kids in those days. All my buds out here in CA seem to have grown up on a Redline.

I picked that photo because of the colors and expected yours had a normal front wheel.

Early Redlines are extremely expensive. They were race bikes and light.

I would love to build one some day.

1996 Dyno VFR

Mostly Dyno and GT Parts from museum members

After I parted my Redline I needed something to beat around on and also something to prepare for one of my up and coming riders. Well, he's off his 18" and on this now so I decided to take some better pictures before he destroys it. I didn't want to spend a lot so I started with a low level Mid-School racer frame and fork I bought off a museum member.

Keeping with the theme I bought serviceable rider parts from members to complete the major systems and bought a few new parts from Porkchop BMX to complete it. I had the assembled wheels and freewheel but not much else beside the brake lever.

Switched to GT three piece cranks, black GT pedals, higher gearing, and added a few decals from eBay.

From Members:
Dyno VFR Frame and Fork with headset
Dyno stamped bars with A'me grips
Dyno stem
GT loose ball 8-spline spindle and 180mm cranks
GT stamped VP pedals
Alloy 46T chain wheel
GT seat clamp
GT padded seat
Chrome seat post

From Porkchop:
Chro-Mo chainwheel bolts
Stainless KMZ chain
Dyno fork washers
Front and rear axle nuts
Dia-Compe 988 brake set
Brake cable wire in stainless
A'me plastic bar ends

Done at home:
I made the valve stem caps in my press using spent .38 Special brass and left over generic black plastic caps trimmed with a razor blade.
I repainted the spider, stem cap bolts, quill bolt, headset upper crown nut and lock nut, seat post bolt with epoxy enamel.
The seat clamp was worn and the GT logo was spent so I polished the clamp.
I also lightly polished the head of the stem to rid most of the worn look without making it stand out.
I used black cable sheath left over from a bike that is now half parted and half thrown away to route the cable

What I had:
Alex alloy 48H rims with stainless spokes and brass nipples, XS (Schwinn) rear hub, Mongoose front hub.
Restored (paint and shims) Odyssey brake lever
Sure, the decals are worn and cracked and the paint has chips but there's not many red VFRs in the museum and it cost a lot less than my Cool Streak to build. The only weird part was setting up the cantilever brake but now that it's done, I'm glad I made that choice as it works really well.

It's red pearl over white.

surly fat tires
They are cool, and I own a Surly, Long Haul Trucker, best most comfortable bike I have owned, mines still new only 1300 miles.
I put 8500 on my Specialized before it had a drop out issue.
Heres a pic of all our critters in the barn when the kids lived with us.
This purple bike is a custom she out grew.

Bottom pic is her Trek I fitted with rapid fire shifters and street tires.
The bike was for sale for $250, but the guy who owned it ran over it and bent the back rim, I got it from him for $40, also I put a decent seat on it. She still rides it.
