There really is a Santa Clause

Post by donhuff »

The SS pin tumbler was on my list, but the Dillon 550 was a complete surprise. My youngest son gave it to me. He is the only one of the three that shows any interest in reloading.

There sure are a lots of parts in that box!

Very nice.
Gotta get mine running again.

Consider the Inline Fabrications Quick Change Ultra Mount and the new combined output and empty brass bins plus one of the toolhead lights
and MAYBE the ergo lever and one of the bullet bins

I've got 4 top plates for the QC mount for various bits of equipment.

IF you are putting orders in to Dillon try to group stuff as much as possible to avoid shipping charges.
Toolheads and powder dies tend to be less expensive in orders of 3 or more as well.

Be sure you check the back of your 550 manual before buying new caliber conversion kits.
For example if you already have a conversion for .45 ACP the only thing you need for .308 or .30-06 is the .308 caliber funnel. (Likewise .243 Win, 6.5x55 Swede, .25-06 or 270 Win.) If you have the conversion for 9mm and the conversion for 5.56 then you have all the parts required for .380 ACP as well. If you have the 9mm shell plate and the 38Sp/.357 locator buttons then all you need is the 40 caliber funnel to load .40 S&W. I think Brian Enos has a conversion chart spreadsheet on his forum that might be easier to read than the back of the most recent 550 manuals I've seen.

There's several threads on various boards about Dillon upgrades and the 550 in particular.
For tool head storage with dies installed the Dillon holders are pretty expensive and there are other options:

Where to put the refrigerator magnet:

Best place I've found to get 1" lock rings (9 or 50 count)

550/650 tips and tricks (I don't agree with all of these and some are easier purchased now than DIY, in particular don't bother getting the spare primer magazine)

As I noted above I tend to prefer the Inline Fabrication upgrades to the Dillon factory OEM versions.

IF you have issues with the primer feed binding there is an aftermarket primer bearing track available or you could make it yourself:
