Re-Zero Digital Night Vision Photon

Postby LowKey » 30 Jan 2018 15

Haven't seen any hogs for a while. Took the opportunity yesterday evening to check zero of the digital night vision scope. As there was more crosswind than expected, only one click of horizontal adjustment was made. Also tried different targets to see which would work best at night, an hour after sunset.

The Sightmark Photon XT uses digital night vision technology.
It is different from Gen 0, 1, 2, and 3 technology.
It is different from ATN thermal scopes which presently cost a minimum of $2,000.

Everything seen in the Photon appears as a black and white image.

The black and white vertical cross worked best at 100 yards. The target's white lines were 2 inches thick. The Photon cross hair reticle is not ultra fine, and its thickness filled about three-quarters of the 2 inch white cross at 100 yards.

The 3 inch black circle also worked well, with good contrast against the target's light background.

At 100 yards, the square of aluminum reflective tape could only be seen if it was perfectly aligned like a mirror to reflect back to the scope. It was not great as a target. Nothing orange on the target could be seen, and the white hand warmer packet was not visible, both presumably due to lack of contrast with the target's white background.

150 yards is about the max range of the Photon without an external illuminator. At that range, the dark blue provided good contrast to the white circle on the painted steel plate. The white circle was very gray at that range, but it was still usable as a target.

The targets were also tested at sunset, with some remaining sunlight. The results were the same.
