I went ahead and bought their NVRS FF24063 4X50 Monocular as well.

Scanning the senderos, food plots, and native grass patches with a near 10-pound rifle would wear you out. I found a factory refurbished unit with a full warranty at a great price.

Safer than scanning with the rifle, too. Good buy!

Smart move.

Scanning with the scope also wears out batteries.

Yeap, that too!

Yesterday I sighted the rifle in with my new load with the Speer #2213 bullet and H4198.

Sighted in both the Weaver K4 Classic Scout for day use and the NVRS 3x42 for night use. I will still need to adjust the ghost ring for non-optic use.

At 50 yards, the 6" gong was very easy to see with a crosshair of 1" yellow masking tape across it. No so at 100-yards. At 100-yards, the same was not visible with the 3X. My berms have a brushy/grassy background, and I could easily see the post frame and bull panel wiring as well as the chain that the 6" gong hangs from. The rusty gong eluded me. I painted it white, and the IR illuminator gave me a white pinhead to shoot at. I don't think I will have any issue with hogs at that distance given their size, just like I could see all the features of the berm, just the plate was hard to pick out.

It was a very cloudy night. The first shots were at 25-yards, and with my eye, I could not see that berm. No problem with the unilluminated scope though, it didn't need the IR.

My night time experience with a traditional scope in ambient light conditions is going to pay off. Typically I care a flashlight and never turn it on, serving only for emergency use. You cannot go back and forth between the NV and any white light; it is going to remain important to use total discipline not to use artificial light.

While the technologies may be different, the Photon XT digital night vision peformed similarly while sighting in. At 50 yards, it was easy to see (in black and white) a bright orange 3" stick-on bullseye against white cardboard. But at 100 yards, the orange bullseye disappeared completely from view, while the white cardboard target was plainly visible.

I don't understand why the orange bullseye disappeared. Maybe the brightness setting could have been adjusted to make it more visible.

The solution was to use gray duct tape to put an X on the white cardboard to continue sighting in. While the gray duct tape was visible enough at 100 and 150 yards for sighting in purposes, the edges were not distinct.

As you say, this apparent color blindness at distance has not been an issue when looking at hogs.

Thanks for the info lowkey. I'm still working on the getting the scope lower and further back, so my eye is in the eyecup. I added a base extension, but it was not quite there, but the extension added height which I did not need. I bought yet another mount that uses the Ruger scope mounts over the ejection port. I will cut it off forward of the front mount, and I'm hoping that this is little bit extra needed aft and it will be as low as the scout mount on the forward receiver.

Last night it was clear and cold without any moonlight. The NVRS is truly a starlight scope, no illumination need out to 200 yards. The trick is getting your eye in that cup, the change is amazing. The stars in the upper peripheral were beautiful. I turned the IR on but it provided nothing as I could already see to the limit of the NV optics.

The NVRS Monocular arrived, but it seems rather toy-like after working with the scope. It takes a lot of manipulation of both the objective and focus to scan a field with varying distances. Like the riflescope, last night the IR illuminator did not change much nor was it needed. Honestly, as just a viewing device, I think I would have been better off with the 2x24 version of the monocular, it probably would not have needed the manipulation the 4x50 needs. Hmm, the outfit that handles the refurbished units has the 2x24 at $89, and they both have a liberal return policy so I might as well compare them for the modest cost of returning one.

I also have this God'a Grip Cheek Pad, a 5/8" rise, heading my way. With the base and pad, hopefully, I will be ready after another shooting session to starting working the pasture.

I need to correct my statement concerning "toy-like" When I attempted to adjust the focus, I inadvertently loosened the eye-ball. I will blame it on big fat fingers in the dark :!:

I also read the instructions. With the objective at mid-range, the focus is set and left from there, the objective is turned to correct for the range. We have had a couple of clear nights and it works as advertised and there is nothing "toy-like" about it. It is as sturdy and well built as the riflescope. Not sorry about purchase the 2X24 either. I see the 4X being used from my tower blinds over food plots and the 2X being used while I'm on foot I where my visibility is limited by habitat.

Question time, and I hope I'm not disciplined for changing topic. Now, what is the equipment partially obscured behind your seat, It sure looks like an airplane to me. You didn't purchase one again, did you?

Good luck,
Frank
