Very Short Range Trip

Post by Jaybm »

Got there just as the RO pulled in and a number of shooters decided to take advantage
of the beautiful 60 degree weather.

Managed to claim my favorite # 4 slot at the 100 yard range. Takes me about four trips
to the truck to get all the " stuff " out and set up. But got er done, put a fresh battery
in the Red Dot and ready to go.

Thought I would shoot some three round groups to see how I would do. Loaded three
rounds in the mag, levered one in the chamber, lined the Red Dot just a tad high for
the first round. Slowly pulled the trigger and the hammer fell but no bang ??? Light
strike ??? Try that again ... no bang ???

Well I had anticipated that this would happen if I didn't trim that .25 brass case
short enough that I used in the safety opening. Was sure I took enough off but
evidently not.

Back to the house, punched the pin out but that brass case was a bear to get out.
Looked somewhat deformed. Reinstalled the safety for now. Won't know if the firing
pin is messed up till I get another trip to the range.

Learn from my mistakes ... Jim

I never thought about that as the shell cases aren't designed for impact that the hammer strike and resulting inertia put onto it. I wonder if you could fill it with jb weld to reinforce it. Keep us posted to what you come up with. +corn

I would test it at home by putting a primer in a case and load just it. A primer igniting is just a snap. Point the barrel at something soft. No, not the family cat!

RD. I considered that but wasn't sure about it. Don't want to alarm the neighbors.
The County Council is already considering a no firearm shooting in residential
areas. Some overzealous people ( spell that jerks ) ruin it for every body.

Since you brought it up that's what I'll do yet this evening and thanks.

Already pulled the "bullet" from another .25 but this time I'll do some better
measuring before I trim the case,

ha ha. it was more like CRACK but it worked !

I had some .38sp already primed so it took hardly any time to test.

Great idea and just look at what you can learn here, thanks again.

Went back to the range this morning and I was the first one there !
The carbine worked flawlessly but I must add ... boy, am I out of practice !!!
Too embarrassing to share any photos of the targets  I was shooting
at an 8 inch target at 75 yards and just couldn't pull it off. ha ha, .223
brass bouncing off me from the next station was sorta distracting.

If the cool spell continues I think I need to back up to 25 yards ( or Less )
and start over by tweaking the red dot for 25. 50. 75 and maybe a stretch
to 100 yards.

Somedays it just doesn't work and I do what you are going to do. Bring it in closer and figure it out.
