Reached a goal yesterday

Post by Steelbanger »

I killed my third deer of the seasons yesterday afternoon using a cast bullet. Shot it with my Renegade .54 Flintlock using a 415 gr. Maxi Bullet. The only problem I had was that I didn't have any bullets on hand and so Monday morning found me firing up the lead pot and running off about 35-40 beautiful bullets. One of them dropped this deer berween 60 & 70 yds. with a 90 gr. load of 2F black powder. Open sights, aperture rear with a bright red bead front sight to be precise.

My earlier two deer were both killed with 38-55's and Ranch Dogs 230 gr. FN bullet. The first was shot with an Encore rifle with a 38-55 barrel by Jesse Ocumpaugh, the second with a Glenfield, another rebored and chambered by Jesse. All doe because that's the way the regulations for this state are set up.

Butchering this morning then preparing for my second cataract operation which takes place on Feb. 1. I have 4 or 5 pre op discussions scheduled!?

Way to go Steel! Which mold did you cast the Maxi bullet from?

Good luck with the cataract op and please keep us posted.

Sorry but I forgot again.

I forgot to mention that I used a Thompson/Center single cavity muold. As cast this bullet weighs 412 to 414 but I always round them out adding weight for all the lube these huge smashers take. There is not a single mark to identify Maker, Bullet Weight, Number or anything else but the blocks are aluminum.

Long ago I had decided to sell both the moulds I had for the Maxi, the 54 and a 50. I put them in my friends shop and within a day the 50 mould was shoplifted. I returned the 54 back here and will have it to the end.

It is really sad that someone took the mold. The FFL I trade with is a husband/wife team that does business at their ranch location. Their storefront and shop is part of a large metal barn. The storefront is small but they have a walk-in vault that is full of the boxed firearms. In that they know everyone that comes to them to do business, they have never had a problem with anyone walking into the vault to see if there is something back there that would interest them. Unfortunately, during the last ATF audit, they discovered that someone was interested in a revolver and walked out with it. The box was empty. That is really disheartening as it is someone that was called a friend. Of course, they have no idea who the "friend" is.
