Porkers at the feeder...

Post by Ranch Dog »

Their back, twenty two of them! They came to the house feeder last night and stayed until everything was gone. I walked out to them, got about 30 yards from them to verify the count. Durn if they didn't come back this morning. Here they are as they were streaming in...

My dog went out towards them, she approached them with the rising sun at her back which I thought was pretty smart. When she was about 20 yards from them and all 22 were present, she decided this was not a good idea and slowly retraced her steps.

I have some friends coming to visit over the weekend so hopefully if I don't harass them, they can take home a load of them.

Just curious, what's the breakdown? From the photo, they all look to be smallish, equal sized. All cousins and siblings, ya think, or were there any Mamas or Aunts in the mix?

This sounder of hogs runs from about 25# to 65#. It just a mix of little ones with no adults. I'm actually surprised that they have been thinned out by coyotes but they have been roaming around all summer. These are actually ideal sized to be put in the freeze or on the pit.

It is hard to tell. I haven't seen them the last two nights now. It is exactly like I tell other when it comes to hunting these critters, I'm successful simply because of the opportunity I'm presented by living here. My friend coming this weekend will probably think "what hogs?"

Should have popped a couple while I could.

Well, shot two of the squealers last night. They came into the feeder at 9:00 so I cut off the yard lights so I could work in close to them, got about 30 yards from them. Waited for two to line up proper and shot them with my Marlin chambered in 32-20 Win.

I cleaned them and cut them into complete sides, down the middle of the backbone. They weigh about 13 lbs each so just about perfect for my grill.
