That's in Alabama not Georgia, a little south of Demopolis al

It's still in the "let's talk about it " stage right now RD.

Kaycee and I are in for sure. Other than us two, none are a sure thing. My two sons seem interested and are almost positive to come. MrLucky started it all, so I guess it's more up to him to pick dates. I'll get with my group and see what dates they might have open. I can go just about anytime.

Oops... corrected to AL. I took the Myrtlewood off the lodge's website. Would Demopolis be better?

Just got off the phone with the owner, here's the latest scoop.

He said they have plenty hogs.

Best time for a hog hunt is after deer season ends on February 10.
During deer season, hunters do the more expensive deer hunts and also shoot hogs.
Hog only hunts are not available until after deer season ends.
He said deer hunting season started today.

My first thought is that the hogs might still be gun shy the day after deer season ends,
so the hunting might be a little better a couple of weeks later.

He suggested from February 11 through the middle of March.
My prior hunt there was March 17 of last year.

As I recall a two day weekend hunt would involve arriving at the lodge early Friday
for an afternoon Friday hunt.
Then a morning and afternoon hunt on Saturday.
Then a morning hunt available on Sunday, depart after lunch Sunday.

Weekdays are also available, so there is flexibility there.

First question would be who wants a weekend hunt, and who could do a weekday hunt.

Here are the the first four weekend dates available:

Feb 12-14 (Valentines Day)
Feb 19-21
Feb 26-28
Mar 4-6

So a show of hands please for either:
Weekend, or
Weekday

And as a suggested starting point if weekend is preferred, another show of hands please for:

Feb 26-28 or
Mar 4-6

donhuff wrote:233 miles for you and 216 for me. So that's really close to the same. My son Scott, will have to come from Charlotte, 514 miles! But he will probably spend some time with us since it's on the way there, and come the last leg of the trip riding with me. Then you and Carey could ride together. What about Kyle?

But yes, picking a caliber will be tough. I wanna know what each will do. I will be able to loan a couple to my two sons, so I will get to see how they do. Carey will most likely opt for the 357 since he seems to be recoil shy  I let him shoot my 44 with 7.0gs of red dot and a 245 swc. That's a light load right? And that's how I had the box of bullets marked "LITE LOAD". After pulling the trigger on the first round, he looked at me and said "that is NOT light". But after shooting a few, he was hitting the metal plate out at the big pine in the far corner of his pasture 230 yards out. Son Scott has a Marlin 44 that he might want to use, but I bet I can talk him into using a rossi instead.

It does not seem like there is any interest in this hunt outside of us few, I wonder if it would get more interest if we put it in another section of the forum? I know I almost never look in this hunting section because I never hunt.

are you going to the launch this weekend?
----------------
Hi Don-
I can bring and loan any of my 92s for the hunt. The big pine is way out there--that's good shooting, Carey! I guess the big unknown is how far from the hogs we'll be setting-up. It would be nice to know before we go to optimize sighting in. Kyle will not be able to attend, but yes, we'll be at the launch on Saturday. If you'll be there we'll discuss further.

Oh yeah, either weekend or weekdays make no difference to me (except the first week in March). Otherwise I'm flexible the rest of the year.

MrLucky,

We finally have a date picked out that us three can all agree on. March 19-20. There are three of us "for sure" me, one of my sons, and kaycee. My son is working on getting another guy but I'm not holding out hopes for it happening.

I wish we could recruit two more to get the reduced rate.

wish i was going to be near there as it sounds like fun, but you can keep your hogs. the wild life near NYC is plenty wild (although the worst are of the 2 legged variety). out of curiosity, how do feral hogs taste compared to say store bought pork? is there much difference?

As long as the meat is treated properly in the field, it is outstanding. Not a lot different than domestic pork.

Two more Rossi Riflemen to round out the trip would be awesome! Come to Central Alabama, hunt some hogs and have a great time! No matter what, we're going to have a blast!
Come join us!
