What would you use?

Post by jdl447 »

Hunt with the following straight-walled cartridge rifles during the deer gun season and the youth deer gun season: .357 Magnum, .357 Maximum, .38 Special, .375 Super Magnum, .375 Winchester, .38-55, .41 Long Colt, .41 Magnum, .44 Special, .44 Magnum, .444 Marlin, .45 ACP, .45 Colt, .45 Long Colt, .45 Winchester Magnum, .45 Smith & Wesson, .450 Marlin, .454 Casull, .460 Smith & Wesson, .45-70, .45-90, .45-110, .475 Linebaugh, .50-70, .50-90, .50-100, .50-110, and .500 Smith & Wesson.
These are the only legal firearms for Ohio whitetail .
Just looking for what some of the more experienced hunters here would choose, as this is only the second year Ohio has allowed rifles.

Greetings
What will the hunting conditions be ? Probable Range to deer ? Ohio,, so I think your corn crunchers are as big as East ILLinois.
The only calibers I do not recommend are the .35'S, 41 Long Colt, 44 Special, 45 ACP, 45 S&W. I just do not have any confidence in those calibers exiting. The 35 Max will with 200 grain bullets.
No exit hole means no or little blood trail. I have spent far to many hours on hands and knees trying to track deer with no exit wounds.
My first deer with a revolver in ILLinois was with the 375 Supermag. Clean through and very nice trail. Any of those other calibers out of a rifle will do the job. Load them like a rifle with a good heavy bullet and you will have no troubles.

Kind of the same questions that Missionary has asked. Distance and size. I see your profile preference is the 92 so in that line the 44 Mag, 45 Colt if you are reloading, or 454 Casull. I picture a bit of distance 100 to 150 yards so I would personally want that 92 scoped but alas, no mounts to be found.

That really is a weird (& dumb) mix of cartridges that does make much of a regulatory since. If a scope is to be used I would find a 444 Marlin or a Marlin chambered in 45-70 Govt. The Rio Grande in 45-70 is out there but they have become as rare as the proverbial "hens teeth".

The next question we ask is which one of those do you have?

Thanks for the replies, I own a R92 357 Mag. But no scope. I bought it before they were legal for hunting deer. Basically took the the place of my 22s as I reload for it and don't have to pay the stupid prices for 22s. We mostly hunt creek bottoms in hilly wooded terrain. The biggest deer I have ever shot was a 160 lb 8 point. But that was at about 35 years ago with a 12 ga foster slug. I thought about scoping the 357 but it don't look like that's gonna happen for this year. I really don't know if the 357 is a good rifle for deer or not.
Maybe in the right hands, I am really looking forward to deer season again now that we are not limited to shotguns. The LGS around here have a few 45-70 Marlins for 600 bucks new.
Thanks again.

I'm in the same situation. I've got a 20" .357 Rossi that I'm going to use 180g. Buffalo Bore hard cast solids with a very flat nose. Muzzle velocity is supposed to be close to 2000fps. It's mounted with a 4x Weaver scout scope, and shots will be within 50-75 yards.

If I'm not assured of a correct angle shot I won't take it.

Well the distance is and the weight is right there in R92 357 Mag territory! It sounds like Hombre is well setup and I would venture that he will do well within 100 yards.

jdl447, have you tried reloading any heavy bullets or bought like ammo and tried the accuracy with open sights at 75 yards?

jdl447...

Maximumbob54's post concerning the sight changes he made to his R92 357 caused me to want to suggest that you consider the Skinner Peep for your R92 with a small bead.

I buy my bullets from Missouri bullet. Up until now I have buying 158 rfln unsized and unlubed. I then Alox and size to 357 loaded over 6 grn. Unique. I can hit a 4" gong at 50yrds off a rest with stock sights 75 would be stretching it for me. I see Missouri bullet sells a 180 gr wfn 18 Brh. Powders I have on hand, 296, 2400 and Unique. I'll check out the sights in the sight up grade post.
Thanks,

I can second the second paragraph. So far no one can tell me how they got that list nor can they tell me why they skipped over all the straight walled 40's. So my Sharps (40-65) stays home and it will either be the 92 in 45 Colt or the Wizard in 45-70. I'm doing some scouting right now (squirrel hunting) and the choice may come down to what conditions I find preseason in my likely hunting area.

Here in Utah we kill em with cars..."......... +corn

On a serious note, I have seen people shoot a mule deer at close range, put 3 and 4 holes clear through the
animal, and have the deer take off running for miles. Bullet doesnt expand. High power rifles.
Hand gun 357 Magnum and 45 Colt are not legal in Utah, according to the proclamation.
44 mag is. I dont know how they view this ammunition in a rifle. The law says, a center fire rifle, or a hand gun capable of 500 foot lb at the muzzle, stated by ammo manufacturer, for elk 500 ftlb at 100 yards.
Muzzle loader 50 is ok for deer but 54 is required for elk.

Im sure a 357 mag rifle would be viewed as legal, but it would be the minimum.

Don't ask me to do anything where where I can't take Bible and Gun, I would leave Dog home, but reluctantly.
