I use Johnson Paste Wax + Lee Liquid Alox + paint thinner . In about equal amounts . You can vary the paint thinner to get the viscocity wou want . Bullets shpuld come out looking like they have a light brown varnish finishe .

This is what I use on all my cast bullets .
God bless

I made up a batch of Ben's Red formula, from the castboolits forum, and it was working good in 357, 44, 45C and 45-70. But in my 30-30, I have been getting bad leading. I think that I have reached the velocity/pressure limit of that mix. I'm going to give it another try today and see what happens. The gas checked bullets did fine with no lead and VERY good accuracy. But the plain base load I shot did not do so well and got lead in the last 3-4 inches of the barrel. I have some of the PB bullets loaded over the same charge as the GC load from the other day, to see if it was the gas check making all the difference.(I hope not)!

The 4570 has maybe 300+ shots on it without needing a real barrel cleaning yet. I just wipe it out and oil. I have not been pushing the speed on it yet as I don't need much more than I have already 38.0-IMR4198. The beer cans die instantly! In the 3030, I am shooting 18.0 -IMR 4198 behind the Lee 170F. That should be around 1600fps. I put 3 shots into one hole @ 50 yesterday. Then I noticed a sign that said the range was closed on Mondays now! WHAT??? They ought to lock the gate dangit. I tried a few other loads, 8.0 800X and 5.0 titegroup. Neither did worth squat. I was looking for a light plinking load, but with the 18-4198 doing so well, It might be my favorite cast load. I just hope the PB does as well today.

Well, the gas check IS making a difference. The 18.0/ 4198 without a gas check is no where near as accurate as that same load WITH a gas check..........damit! This is with a bullet with a full diameter bottom band too. And before you say velocity, I also shot that same no GC bullet in front of 5.0 titegroup and got about the same kind of accuracy out of it as the 18.0 of 4198. A group about the size of my fist. But the gas check load will put 5 holes inside an inch at 50. I could get 3 into 1 big hole sometimes, and then open it up with the 4th-5th shot.

But what really surprised me was my 16" 357 that I took along with me to have something to shoot while I let the 3030 cool down. I had loaded some 140 grain truncated cone 9mm lead bullets that I had casted a long time ago. They were sized @ 359 and behind them I had 8.6 of 800x. # of them made one hole @50 with iron sights. I might have to keep up with that load! I also shot some 158 grain jacketed soft points in front of 17.0 of 300MP........DANG.... those were stout! First time I have ever seen a fire ball coming out of the barrel of a pistol cartridge carbine.

Over the last few days I've been perusing that 130 page, 2589 post monstrosity of a thread about boolit lube on castboolits. I don't have the same patience to keep experimenting with lube like those guys. I've kept things fairly simple and it's worked pretty well so far. For my handguns I mostly use 45-45-10 tumble lube, it's quick, easy and just plain works. For my .45 I tumble with plain Johnson paste wax and my bullet has just one standard lube groove. I also have a couple of Ranch Dog rifle molds and I find it easy to use his dip lube method, it's hassle free and just works. I don't have a lubrisizer so I pan lube when I don't tumble lube. In the past I've mixed up several different types of lube and I've settled on Felix lube, it works good and doesn't smell bad like melted lithium grease. http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthr ... wfl+recipe

Centaur1,

I know what you mean. Some of the topics over there that you really want the info from, get too big and confusing. Makes it hard to weed out the info from the guy that started casting...yesterday!

In the past I always used Lyman 50/50 cause I got a bunch of it at one time and it worked well. Then I ran out and decided to try making my own because I like doing things like that. Making the lube is a lot of trouble and expense, and I don't think it's any better than what I had bought. I think they just threw everything but the kitchen sink in the "Ben's Red" in the hopes that something in there will have to work. I do have to say that I did NOT have leading issues with it but, it was not staying in the grooves when I dumped all the bullets into a box for storage.I remelted some of it and added more bees wax, but still not enough. SO, I broke down and ordered some lube from LsStuff, X-lox 2500. Ahaaaa the sweet smell of alox and bees wax. Now this stuff STAYS in the lube grooves like it ought to. And I'm sure it will protect the bore from leading as well as the old Lyman lube did. I have not shot much of it yet as I just got it last week. At $2.00 a stick the price is very good too!
