RG4570 and RD's TLC460-425-RF

Post by Ranch Dog »

I've started working with my 425-grain bullet in the Rio Grande, prepping for a hunt. I'm limiting pressure on the RG to 35.0 KPSI and shot strings to mainly establish the velocities at this pressure but also take a peek at potential accuracy. I was shooting with a Lead Sled Solo across a chronograph screen and it tends not be the best way to test accuracy in that there is so much shooting but still I can get an idea of the potential. I shot all the the appropriate Hodgdon except H4198 and Varget as the QuickLoad velocity projections where really low based on the 35.0 KPSI ceiling.

The bullets where sized at .458" and the cartridge overall length at 2.500". Feed and function through the rifle is outstanding. Here is how things lined up.

Next, I wanted to see what the terminal performance looked like out at 150 yards, would any difference between those velocities over 1700 FPS really matter.

Between my most accurate 1700 FPS+ loads, I loose about 7 points or approximately 4% of the potential killing authority. I will take a closer look at both H322 and H335 as shot from the bench at 100 yards vs. the Lead Sled at 50 yards and see how they measure up. What's another 20 rounds at 41 ft/lbs of recoil!

Ouch, and that's why I love my 30-30's so much!!!!!! Any time I get the urge to buy a big bore rifle, I just think about how much I hate shooting my 870 with 2 oz turkey loads.

Finished up shooting with the TLC460-425-RF in the RG4570; final comparison of H322 and H335. I did all the shooting at 100 yards across a chronograph to record the number. The first three shots out of the the string, the emphasis was insuring the chrony was recording and the shots where going to land on the Caldwell target in that I have only shot these loads at 50-yards. After that, the remaining seven shots with each powder was to establish the accuracy of the load. All ten shots form the performance strings.

H335 was a definite winner over H322 in accuracy. Originally, I expect to loose a bit for velocity with H335 at 35.0 KPSI but it ended up being only a 25 FPS loss. The targets where shot of bags at a bench. The H335 was the second 10-shot string and I suspect it would have been a bit tighter had it been the first string. Twenty shots will wear on you a bit.

Definitely minute of nilgai. Will do some more shooting the sight it in at 100-yards and then look at the shooting out to 200 yards.

Got'ta say, if Marlin would have offered a 336 in 45-70 Govt., I doubt the 444 Marlin would have ever been developed. This little rifle is quite a package especially with the heavy cast bullets!
