Post by donhuff »

I aint never did a brass one before. Guess I better go turn the old lyman pot on and get out some ingots.

Thanks GasGuzzler, I really "needed" another 357 mold!

didn't take long to get a good sized pile of bullets. I do have to say though that a brass mold is HEAVY!!!!

And it takes about three times longer to get it up to temp too. I usually just stick my aluminum and iron molds in the pot with the lead. I was a little afraid to do that with this brass one until I learn a little more about it.

A good thing about taking so long to heat up is that it cools off a lot slower to. You have time to set it down and do something else for a minute without having to go through a bunch of bad bullets to get it back hot again. Just don't let it sit to long.

That pile of bullets had not been picked over yet. I spread them out and culled maybe 10% like usual. I won't have as many culls when I get used to the brass and figure out it's little quirks that are different than aluminum. I will continue culling as I pick each one up individually to set them on their base for "painting".
And so now is the hard part.............deciding what color to make them!!!!!!!!!!!!

I checked the diameter on a couple of dozen, .360 to .361". And the majority of them were right on .3605". That is so nice after years of using Lyman molds and they are always any size BUT, what they are suppose to be.
I weighed those same ones to and the average was right on 180.....how does he do that? There was one or two that were 179.8, and I had one, that went 182.1. But most of them are 180. 4 or 5 to 181.4 or 5.

The finished one that I got from Gas weigh 188 grains. I don't think that the paint and check weigh 8 grains but maybe they do. I'll know in a little while.

Doc,

He did not give me the mold, but rather we swapped some bullets and parts, and he gave me this style bullet to try. Of course I shot one of my best ever 100 yard groups with that gun, using HIS bullets. So I HAD to have the mold.

The bad thing is, this was his first try at casting......I think he did alright!

Don,
Id say this turned out for a win win situation for the two of you. Doesn't always work out that way, nice when it does!

I won.

Don, my bullets weren't perfect but my cull rate was more like 50% because I knew you knew how to know.

My lead is heavier or my mold (given to me Doc) is a little proud, like me.

Thanks Fake Santa. I know you'll read this.

Well I culled another hand full or two like I said I would have to do. When you pick each and every one of them up you see the imperfections better. Pluss I am culling the whole time that I am casting to. If I see a bad one, I stick it back into the pot while it's still hot if I can, saves time heating back up. I knock the sprue off and let it fall into the pot most of the time.

I got a few (300) painted and put checks and sized about a dozen. All dressed out they weigh in at 184 on average.

No difference in the molds I grantee you. I cast HOT and that will make them weigh less. I could tell that you were casting a lot cooler than I do.

Wife sez they are to purdy to be bullets Wants to know the color so she can get some nail polish in that shade!
