Barrel Slug Diameters

Post by Ranch Dog »

Thought I would add a post with the slugged diameters of the Rossi's I own. I will need to add to this as I have time because I will be reslugging them all. Please feel free to add your measurements. As a standard, a lead teardrop fishing sinker with a hole through the longitudinal axis should be used. The measurement should be taken with a micrometer to .XXX5", a caliper should not be used.

Diameters used in this list are display "bore/groove", measured in inches.

Cartridge
  • 30-30 Win
    • RG3030 - .3000/.3080
  • 357 Mag
    • R92 - .3450/.3550
  • 44 Mag
    • R92 - .4200/.4285
    • Wizard - .4200/.4285
  • 45 Colt & 454 Casull
    • R92 - .4430/.4510
  • 45-70 Govt
    • RG4570 - .4500/.4570
    • Wizard - .4500/.4570
  • 480 Ruger
    • R92 - .4695/.4765

A couple of question on actually slugging the barrel with the lead sinker. Is this done from the bolt side or other end of the barrel. Now I assume the two dimensions are the actual bore size and the larger one is the rifling in the barrel. Last but not least is how far is the lead sinker pushed into the barrel and how?

REALLY Michael?

So your bore on your 92 .357 mag actually slugs at .355? THAT would be a pleasant surprise, guess I've got to go get some more fishin' weights and drive one down through mine. IF mine were to slug the same, would I be safe using cast sized at .359 which is what the rest of my .357's take or is that something you can answer?

I have zero problem with getting another sizer made to accomodate this rifle, Buckshot over at Cast Boolits makes them for my RCBS and Lyman sizers very reasonably. Man that would be great if it would slug that as I've got an HP 358156 Lyman (Eric at Hollowpoint molds did it for me) but it drops at .358 or a bit less, most of my custom molds I have at .360 so I can shove them around as I wish.............

THANKS for the baseline, I'll post mine as soon as I get up the nerve...........

Just got off the phone with Braztech regarding the sight height issue, I'll start a new post on that........

Dang, don't own a Rossi yet. I've got slugged measurements from all of my Marlins, but their oversize measurements wouldn't add value to this thread. Be patient with me, guys....I'm strongly leaning the Rossi way....I won't jettison all of my Marlins, I'll just add Rossis (sp?) to the gang.
