45 Colt, Lee 452-300-RF, Rossi M92

Post by Ohio3Wheels »

Anybody with direct experience good or bad with this combo? I'm thinking about it but not sure if I want to mess with gas checks, not that I haven't but when they get this big they get pricey.

Thanks, make smoke,

I'm petty sure we have some members shooting this bullet; I think moon tree comes to mind...

I ran a search for "lee 452 300", click here for the results.

Micheal, you have a good memory.

Ohio, I've only shot about 20 rounds of the Lee 452-300 RF through my Rossi (Life got in the way), but I think I'm going to love them. I hit 2 for 2 on an 8 inch gong at 100 yards sitting on my butt with a mono-pod. Out side spread 2 1/2" . I was shooting factory sights.

My new Marble tang sight came in yesterday and I have 150 bullets cast and ready for some testing. AND, firearm deer season starts here in a couple weeks. I''ll keep you posted on the results.

I'll be interested in your results. I had planned to pick up the mold and a Lee sizer along with gas checks this week end at the gun show, but the show got cancelled. There's a local couple that comes to the shows with a lot of Lee stuff at good prices and I try to do business locally when ever I can. So I either wait until the 21st or call and see if I can order them sooner. One way or the other I'm headed in the direction of the 300 gr boolit for my 45 Colts. Probably try some in 20 to 1 and some in my slightly harder alloy.

Moon, forgot to ask. What size are you using? Based on published barrel size I would think 452 would be okay as the scuttlebutt is that the one thing Rossi does with consistency is make barrels.

I shoot this bullet in my 454 and Navy Arms/Rossi .45 Colt and both really like it, it does much better in the 454 though. It is my go to bullet in cast for the 454.

Well, to date, I've gone through about 100 of these doing load development. At the present my best load in the Rossi has been the 452-300, Gator gas check, Emmerts lube and 23.6 grains of H110. Doesn't seem to mater what brand cases although my preference is for Star Line. In the convertible Black Hawk I find that 19 grain of H110 is about the upper limit of my tolerance. But that load does well in the BH.

Dang.

You stop at 19 H110 in .45C and I have some 16 W296 .357.

Might be pulling them ha.

Try them if you haven't already, the lighter boolit might make a difference. I actually shot them all the way up to about 22.4. One cylinder full and the rest went into the '92 :) the load was STIFF and I knew I wouldn't want to take what it need to develop it in the BH. Besides the Rossi didn't much go for it either. The 19 gr would probably work in both, but the Rossi really likes the heavier load and the BH works good with the 19. Much above that in the short barrel and I start to worry about a visit from Smokey Bear :D
