Water Quenching

Post by Bibletotingunslinger »

I'm sittin over here with more lead than 3 guys can carry and a bunch or round balls.
Contemplating this new 92 yall been trying to sell me...
So if I did buy said 92, and I did cast boowits, would my soft lead work,,if I dropped em in a 5 gal bucket of water right out of the mould?
How much does water quenching help?
I'm scared of lead, only way I can tell if its good for balls is cast some,
I mean the stuff I get looks like it been through www3. Nobody here parts with wheel weights as all them other places get em.
Don't ask me to do anything where where I can't take Bible and Gun, I would leave Dog home, but reluctantly.

Water quenching only works to harden lead if there is a little antimony present in the alloy. Not sure the percentage. Thst said I do drop my softer boolits in a 5 gallon bucket as it cools them off and keeps them from hitting one another and getting deformed while they're still hot.

You'll get a little hardening if you use range lead and most roofing lead and the like has antimony. I've got a bunch of cable sheath lead that probably has it.

Hey B...gunsliger. Why not cast round balls for that 45 Colt? They would make great bunny killers.

Greetings
Soft lead will work nicely in a 45 Colt up to 1300 FPS. If you have a GC mold type 1400 fps can be reached loaded with 2400 or similar slower powder. Not to many critters walking about that can survive a good solid hit with a 250-300 grain cast bullet moving like that. I would not hesitate to pop any corn cruncher with that loading out to 100 yards. Remember BP cartridge lever rifles like the 45-60 did not really generate a lot more power and were well known a good thumpers out to 100-150 yards.
