NOE 454424 mold

Post by donhuff »

Dang it. I had spent over an hour writing up a good post (I'm slow) and clicked something I shouldn't have. And it all vanished.......I don't like doing computers!

So now you get the short story.

Got this new mold and it works great. If you get a mold from them, get their handles to go with it. They fir perfectly and make using the mold so much easier.

I also got their base chamfering tool to take off that little flashing that sometimes gets on the base. It does a good job and puts a tiny bevel to the base making it easier to load into a case.

Left is 2 1/2 hours with a .41 Lyman two holer. Right is with the NOE 5 hole mold after just one hour.

I'm not real picky bout my alloy. If it will rattle down the barrel and hit the target it's ok with me. I have an airplane buddy that owns a tire store. He gives me most of his wheel weights. But we have another "airplane buddy" too, That also shoots AND cast! (what are the chances of that happening?) I did not know he was a shooter or caster till I saw him at the range a year ago. Anyway, I have to share the lead with him.

I throw it ALL, stick on and clip on, zinc, iron, plastic, rubber, chewing gum, razor blades, and hypodermic needle(?), into a pot and melt. Skim all the crap off before the zinc melts, and pour into ingots. Then I add 1/4 of a roll of lead free solder in with 8 ingots(lbs) of lead. Don't know what that comes out to, and don't really care. I just added enough tin till they started filling out well and called that good nuf. Since I have started powder coating, the alloy does not seem to matter at all, since the PC protects the barrel from the lead. I always water drop, not for the hardening effect, but for the cushioning effect, which get me to the next pour quicker. I did it like this 30 years ago and did not even know it made them harder till a couple of years ago! Then the cooking of the PC takes that temper right back out, so they are pretty soft.

You got that right. I believe it weighs as much as my 4 hole Lyman and it's made out of iron. After a solid hour of casting with it, I was starting to whine about the weight a little. I might try a 4 hole model next time......and there will be a next time. It is sooo nice having the bullets drop oversized, so that I can size down to fit my guns. My Lymans are usually dead on bore size.......if your lucky!

Speaking of size. I shot a few cylinders full through my 45C blackhawk today. I loaded them as cast and PCed, which is .455 - .456. My throats are .456. I got a couple of groups with 3-4 in one ragged hole with one or two out a little. oops the 15 year old russian is skating be right back

Dang it, she fell twice. oh well

My bore is .451, and I usually size to .4525. But I think the bigger one shot a little better. I'll have to give it a better test next time. Now that I see that it might actually help. That was at 25yds.

I shot a good many through the rossi, but they were sized at .4525 also. Nice to have two guns with the same bore!!! I'll have to try a few large ones in it also. You never know what works till you try it. I shot some good groups with the rossi, but not picture posting worthy. I got there at 4:30 so it was already getting dim. Ya know I gots to blame it on something! It for sure was not the ammo, cuz I just hit 3 out of five 3/4" dots with my pistol using the same load. Which BTW was ....wait for it.....9.0g of UNIQUE. What would you expect?

The Italian girl did really well!

That is the very mold I have too. A two holer. I'm like donhuff I just pitch any kind of lead in the pot and put it in the mold. I do flux frequently. I don't even care if all the bullets come out perfect. I shoot them in a Uberti .45 colt, a Ruger Blackhawk .45 colt, and my Rossi 92 in .45 colt. At 25 or 30 yards with the handguns I can hit the black on a 50 yd pistol bulls eye target. With the 92 plastic jugs and beer cans a lot further away. I use the generic 8.5 grns of Unique for everything. Perfection. Been using this mold for over 20 years and it's still cooking. I'll usually cast 100 or so bullets at a time before my hand starts to get sore and tired. Getting old to be doing this stuff a whole lot.
