I normally load with just WSP primers and have never run into any issues. 296 calls for Magnum primers, but I did not have any of those, hence the statement about varying from the norm, with both primers and starting out at the max load listed. If you go off from what the manuals recommend you need to:know you're taking a risk, know what you're doing, and accept if you screw up it's on you.

That said, I was confident the max listed pistol load would be safe in my rifle. Your results may vary and you take it on yourself to deviate from listed loads.

does that cover it Mikld?

Pistol cartridge gets a pistol primer regardless of what it's shot from.....same for rifle (BFR makes a .30-30 single action and a .45-70 single action).

THIS.
Use what the manufacturer/data calls for.
I do use magnum primers when called for however while Winchester USED to produce a magnum large pistol primer their pistol primers are now labeled "for standard and magnum loads".
Yesterday I picked up a box of large pistol magnums and a box of small pistol magnums from Federal
I'd use the Winchesters in a magnum load if that was what I had but currently I'm mostly loading them in .45ACP.

While I am in fact, pretty awesome.. The rifle makes it look easy.

8-)

Seriously, I have not tried a load in this rifle that was not easily accurate enough for anything one would use a 357 Lever gun for. I wish I could say it was all me.

I feel awesome when I carry my 92 carbine in 44 mag with T-Rex loads.
I sort of feel like Thor, well sort of.
That little carbine sure hits like Thor's hammer.
