30/30 on the cheap
30/30 on the cheap
All I wanted was a cheap, reduced power plinking load. I ordered a box of Berry's 150 grain 30/30 flat nosed bullets. I used 13.0 of 2400 powder. Velocity was around 1600 fps. Using a scoped Marlin 4 rounds at 50 yards produced a ragged hole. Went back later and shot 5 times, pulled one high and the other 4 was a ragged hole again. Copper fouling was nonexistent.

never mind... I re-read "scoped Marlin" .... was it micro-groove or Ballard rifling?

Re: 30/30 on the cheap
I love 2400 so much I can't consider it for "cheap plinking" since I have no local source and powder online is not worth it. My idea of cheap plinking .30-30 right now is home cast from free lead and useless Unique but I haven't actually tried them.
My pet .357 loads are 2400 so I'll save mine for that.
Great success though.

try some Accurate 4100 in place of the 2400 if your not seeing any locally.
I bet your within 1/2gr. for the same results.

I am gonna mark down that ACC4100 also. Sometimes 2400 is scarce in East ILLinois also.

Re: 30/30 on the cheap
Several years ago I found that AA#9 was an excellent substitute for the then "unicorn-like" A 2400. Very close in loading amounts and performance. Actually, I've pretty much switched my allegiance to AA#9 although I did buy a pound of A 2400 in the last few months for old time's sake. It's hard to break with my now late mentor's advice to use 2400.
