.44 bullet size .429, .430, .432

Post by Pesty »

Dear all,

First post not picked up my Rossi yet hope to this week. Also new to reloading thought I'd got my head around it but after reading this site about large bores on .44 Rossi rifles and finding out I can get bullet heads in .429 , .430 or .432 I'm now a little bit confused

Any advice appreciated.

Oh and hello. 20 inch stainless 92 incoming

Gotta either try all or slug the barrel to know.

It would also help to know if you are going to shoot jacketed or lead.

Hi,

Lead cast bullets. We see be able to get gm bullets heads readily available at .429

I've found a supplier who will do other sizes mentioned it seems to be a family business I'm guessing using commercially available mounds.

Gas guzzler so it's ok to try the larger diameter ones? I'm looking for accuracy at 25/50 and occasionally 100 meters

the 432 should work fine.
I use 430 in mine, it's my 94 trapper that needs the bigger cast diameter.
but it's better to be a tick too big than too little, and it won't affect pressure or anything unless your touching the chamber walls.
one way to make sure is to measure inside a fired case, if it's 433 or more your good to go.

I have a 94AE Winchester Trapper, and it slugs about .4315, it doesn't like commercial or standard size lead bullets, but does OK with jacketeds. I'ma fixin' to do some experimenting with .432 bullets, and I have some .434's a feller cast up and sent me. There's got to be SOME cast bullet that thing likes, but it might have too fast a twist. My .45 Rossi likes .452 cast bullets, but it has a 1/30 twist. Don't know what the Winchester is.

Hmm. Increased pressure now I'm worried now.

I'll have to buy some factory rounds anyway only ones we can find here are jacketed. I'll measure a fired case as suggested. Cheers

FYI I've been shooting both .430 and .431 Polymer Coated cast bullets in my 44 mag Rossi and they both do ok at light 44 special level power and hot loads with 2400. I haven't rested the gun and checked for fine accuracy, I mostly do plinking at up to 50 feet at bowling pins and milk jugs, they both hit where Im aiming really well at that range. The .430s I've been shooting are made by Bayou Bullets and the .431s are made by Penn bullets. I haven't slugged my bore but I can tell you I've taken the .430s and tried to push them into the muzzle of bore with my fingers and they are large enough that you can't push them in and by visual appearance the .430 bullets are definitely bigger then whatever the bore is. I haven't had any leading at all, but then again the polymer coated cast bullets seem to eliminate that issue, I love the concept
