Badman Bullets

Post by Jaybm »

The weather broke and I finally made the trip to the range.
The five hand loads have been sitting a long time and it was time
to see what they would do.
Image
One observation was these bullets are a tad longer than say Rainier
or Berry's and the resulting OAL was 1.54". I'll need to adjust my
die to achieve 1.57" spec.

Target has seen better days and been kicking around in the back of
the p/u for awhile.
Well, all I could say after the first round down range was WOW ! You
guessed it ... in the diamond !
ha ha, next two went south ( left ) before I got back on track.

Surprisingly I had the rifle stations to myself while a bunch of younger
people, male and female, were at the pistol stations. Appeared as the
RO was instructing them.

Beautiful morning and I burnt a lot of Extreme, Berry and other stuff
while there. That made it impossible to determine how "clean" the
poly coated bullets would leave the barrel. I'll load up the remaining
Badman's and test that next time.

Conclusion: These poly coated bullets are a good alternative to any
other brand I'm familiar with. I'd have to look at the price difference
to decide if I'd switch to them as my first choice.

Just my $0.02, Jim

i'll take a round fired into the middle ANYTIME. if it was my first shot of the day, i would be tempted to smile at everyone, pack up, and go home. :)

jaybm,

Why do you say that you need to hit a certain OAL with that bullet?

I usually just crimp in the crimp groove and let the OAL be whatever, as long as the length feed well and does not affect accuracy.

Don, I was going by the "spec" for a .357mag 158g rn bullet and measurements of other loads.

The 1.54" OAL didn't present any problems what so ever.

So you're saying leave well enough alone especially since my other loads don't require any
adjustment. Sounds like a plan and thanks ... Jim

Nice.

Doesn't it make your day when the first shot fired hits the diamond?

Bruce ... if there had been another shooter there I might have done the happy face
and packed it in.

LowKey ... only when the following rounds follow the same path, grin. Instead I
ask myself ... what tha ? One of these days !!!

Got twenty more of these Badman to load and if the weather cooperates I'll be
out there again next week.

Thanks for commenting ... Jim

jaybm,

What I mean about the oal thing is, I see a lot of times where guys will load a new bullet and try really hard to hit a certain OAL with it. That is good practice, at certain times and loads, mostly with max loadings. But it is really only relevant "IF" you are using EXACTLY the same components as the data specifies. The OAL matters because it determines how much of the bullet is occupying space, in the case. This can drastically change the pressure of the loaded round.

Also, if you are loading bullets to fit several different guns. Then the OAL needs to stay at, or about at, the recommended max OAL for that cartridge to assure that it will fit whichever gun you put it in.

But if you are loading for a particular gun, with no plans to use it in anything else. You can load it to any oal length you want. I usually go for the crimp groove first, and see that this length will feed and chamber properly. It usually does unless your using an odd bullet. Sometimes I'll load long, because I'm trying to make more room in the case for more powder. Sometimes I'll load short to try to make a bullet fit a short chamber or cylinder. And if loading short, AND near the upper end of the load for that powder bullet combo. Drop back on the amount of powder because this will raise the pressure a lot with certain combos. And when loading long. It might take a little more powder to get to the velocity that the book sez you should be at.

If using a bullet with no crimp groove (or data). Then go with a length that will cycle and chamber every time, and adjust powder to get the results you want. In other words, let the gun tell you where the bullet should be located.
