Need load for .357 180 gn lead
Re: Need load for .357 180 gn lead
it looks like you're trying to use existing bullets and powder. when you run out, don mentioned above that there is a good recipe for a 125 gr bullet. the nice part about it (aside from accuracy), is very little kick. great for paper punching.

Blue dot seems to work great at max charge, but as the charge drops, so does the accuracy or consistency.
For me, blue dot worked great at near max (-5 to -10% max or +p) in .44 through a revolver.
Have you had any luck with bullseye?
I go through a lot of unique as well, noticed it will push a 158 gr lrn but because of the twist rate I 'm going to have to switch projectile and powder combo.

No Dan, haven't tried Bullseye for this load/rifle combo because I always figured it was too fast of a burning powder for the application. I figured the pressure would peak well before the bullet left the barrel.

Good wisdom here, I thought about typing a bunch of tech stuff, but it seems to have been said.
Don't ask me to do anything where where I can't take Bible and Gun, I would leave Dog home, but reluctantly.

This is my latest test firing of the 180 gn bullets I mentioned before.
The reason I'm testing them at this time is to potentially replace the 180 gn, .45 Colt loads in a Marlin 1894 used in a steel silhouette match that chrony'd at 1400fps muzzle velocity using 9.8 gns of Unique. I am not attempting to match that muzzle velocity exactly with this bullet but maybe get at least get to 1200 - 1300 fps with it. I think it will still have enough energy to knock over the steel rams at 200m.
I test fired two groups of 5 shots each.
The top 5 holes (1 hole on far right of upper group actually has 2 holes) were fired at 50 yards using my Rossi 92 with 13gns of W296 (win mag primer) using iron sights with a full bead on the center of the target (bullseye)
The bottom 4 holes (the 5th one was fired separately & is at the bottom) were also fired at 50 yds with 10gns of Alliant 2400 (std small pistol primer) also using iron sights with a fine bead at the bottom of the bullseye ring.
Accuracy from this rifle at this range using lower weight bullets is usually much better than this so I have to conclude that the 180 gn lead bullet is not as stable in this rifle given the twist rate.
I will do more testing of this bullet after I'm able to tell if there is severe leading or not from these velocities without using a gas check.

Groo here
The problem with a bullet as long as the 180gr 357 is you must get the FPS up high enough to
spin the bullet fast enough to fly right.
Pistols run between 1/14in to 1/18in where as the m-92 s running 1/30in.
You can't just slow them down, you must match the Rpm's to the bullet.
With that bullet and twist, I would think you need 1600 to 1800 FPS.
That is doable with magnum powders.
The FA 454 has a 1/24 twist and is known to not like heavy [300gr+] bullets till you get them up to
around 1300 or 1400fps.
