The jacketed bullet is going to generate more pressure but it is hard to say what it would be.

Don, RD, thanks for your replies. Not sure what to make of your comments regarding the velocities, with no published data to compare it too, I really have no clue what it should be. If this was a boat race, I could say my rifle is faster then your rifle but I know it's not that simple. I look forward to any additional input you may have.

Yeah, I would usually say that too. But almost 150 fps faster @ 25.5 grains powder is to much to just say that you have a slicker barrel than I do.

I should have made up some of your mild load to see how they did in my gun. If your faster there too, then we would have to look deeper to find a cause. I'm fixin to go back to the range today. I'll see if I have enough stuff to load up a few of those to test.

I loaded up 10 to test. That will be enough to get a good velocity reading.

As I was loading and thinking about the numbers. I'm shooting 8.5 of Unique to get 1000fps
And you could do that fast with 6.8 of the 231???? I know that 231 is faster than unique but that don't sound right either.

I don't know what to say. Used a brand new first time used Master Crony. Of all the rounds we put through her, only had one do over. I did not use the shades as I felt it was not nescasary under the conditions. The Crony was placed about 6-8 feet from the muzzle. I believe the set up provided good results. If ya think I did something wrong, I'm all ears. From your previous comment I went to my Lyman book to compare the 454 velocities, and saw what you meant. Depending on the choice of powder, the psi or cup pressures listed for those velocities was way up there. Now, isn't one of the arguments for using Lil'Gun, higher velocities and lower pressures? Anywho, it's all Greek to me, anybody got a Gyro?

I would like to go back to the specific gravity of the powder, by SAAMI it can vary up to 16%, so you either get less or more bang for the buck, or at least the given charge. QuickLoad takes the SG of the powder into account. The current lot of Lil'Gun I'm working on is 5% heavier than the spec. The last lot was twice that lighter. On a lot of powders, this might not be a big deal, but on the volatile powders it is.

So back to my question of do you have a Lee Dipper of any size. If so, weigh ten charges from the scoop and report the average grain weight and what size dipper was used. It is best to use a dipper near the size of the 45 Colt case, like the one that would come with the Lee die set. Hold the scoop with the leading edge at about a 45° angle and push in down and into the powder. When you lift it out, cut the powder above the rim of the dipper off by sliding a business card across the mouth of the dipper. The main thing is not to "pack" the powder.

If you don't have a Lee Dipper, PM me your address and I will send you one.

Doc,

I loaded those mild 231 bullets to test. But my tripod broke the other day, and I forgot to get the wife's one out of the closet that goes with the camera. So I did not get to test that load.

I could have set up the crony and used a trash can for the "tri pod". But the P L O at the range I go to will not allow you to do anything "unsafe" like that.

RD, I have a full set of Lee dippers plus the one that came with my 45 colt deluxe 4 die set. I'll get back to you with the results, and thanks

Ok, did my dipping today, temps at 33f real feel at 25f.
Used a lee dipper size 2.5cc. According to the lee slide chart for Lil'Gun, it should throw a charge weight of 36.9gr. FYI, powder lot # 1101215 2237

Made dual measurments, one with the Beam scale, one with the Electronic scale.

B. E.
1-37.3. 37.5
2-37.5. 37.8
3-37.4 37.6
4-37.1 37.2
5-38.2 38.3 High
6-37.3 37.5
7-36.6 36.8
8-36.7 36.8
9-36.7 36.9
10-36.2 36.3 Low

Removing the high and low charge weights, remaining weight averages are as follows.
Beam 37.075
Electronic 37.2625

Pretty darn close to Lee's charge weight i would say. So, does this just muddy the waters further? Did we learn anything from this? Cheezzz, looking forward to your thoughts. Will to do anything to explore this so called unusual high velocities. A second round at the range would be nice to try to duplicate ( or not ) the results.
