Mag tech 454 260 jsp

Post by Oz judge »

Guys I just had to let yous know I chronoed some casull loads last year with my magneto speed chronograph & I was super impressed with the mag tech 260gr jsp ammo. Out of my 20" 454 constant 2100 fps . When I checked that out in cartridges of the world that's equall a 444 Marlin in a much smaller & handier package. The hornady 300gr xtp were just under 2000fps . The 454 casull in the Rossi is a serious big game carbine at close to medium range. I found the 300gr hornady loads don't deliver the energy as fast as the mag tech . All 454 rounds I have used have fully penetrated so no recovered bullets . But the sheer smack down power of the mag techs has to been seen to believed . My mate was using a blr in 308 with hot 150gr jrnsp loads , he felt under gunned compared to the 454. So much so he wants to rebarrel it to 358win. Or replace it with a chiappa Alaskan in 45 Colt. Or 45/70. I have found though that even light plinking loads of trail boss with 250gr rnfp hard cast @ 1100fps do the job just fine . Just some fat to chew on for you guys.

Tell your buddy not to mess up a perfectly good BLR.
If he wants a .45-70 then go that route instead there's several good ones out there.

Archer it's a perfectly worn out 308, that key holes 130 & 150 pointed bullets. I couldn't get hold of 180's in time for our trip. So I used 150 rnsp & seated them out as far as I could & loaded them hot. That seemed to work. I bought a 190gr flat point .314" mould to use in that blr & 303 Brit . But my mate is torn between a 358 win rebarrel & a chiappa after handling one last Thursday . The quality of the Marlins were atrocious .

I turned up my nose at Marlin about 4 years ago when 1 out of 3 on the rack were bad.
I ordered and took delivery on a SBL https://www.marlinfirearms.com/lever-ac ... el-1895sbl a while back that came looking nice. I had seen a couple customers receive them in good shape and seen several at the gunshows that showed none of the quality problems they were showing for the initial years after Remington bought them.

My BLR takedown is pretty sweet but at present I think I've managed to put about half a box down it so it isn't broken in good yet.
