Don't give up on the Tula 154 grain as a hunting round yet.

I cut openings in the front of the plastic 5 gallon buckets so that the bullet's initial impact
would be into 13 inches of water in a plastic bag instead of into the 1/10 inch thick hard plastic
of the bucket.

Both the Tula 154 grain Pointed Soft Point PSP and the Prvi Partizan 123 grain PSP
expanded nicely at 100 yards.

I really like the Prvi 123 grain Soft Point Round Nose SPRN.
It's accurate, inexpensive, has good medium range ballistics, reloadable brass casings,
and proven performance against hogs at 150-175 yards.

The 100 yard expansion of the Tula 154 grain looks mighty impressive too.

The Tula might also be a good match for a Mini-30.

What an outstanding idea! Are you using small garbage bags. Your post really has me interested in testing ballistic gelitin penetration for my cast pistol bullets plus the long range rifle bullets. What I'm thinking is using a square 5 gallon bucket for a mold, slide it out and then into a similar bullet with the hole or use a bucket with a hole both as a mold & simply tape over the target hole.

That Tula 154-grain does look real good!

I love your gelatin idea.

For the water buckets, 39 gallon Contractor Clean-Up bags from Lowe's work well.
It's just a heavier duty garbage bag.

Duct tape over the opening in the side (not the top) of the bucket keeps the water bag in place.
Duct tape is also used inside the bucket to keep the stickiness of the outer duct tape
from adhering to the plastic bags. After a bucket is shot, duct tape over bullet entry locations
inside the bucket will protect the plastic bags from being torn during the next usage of the bucket.

The plastic bag goes in the 5 gallon bucket.
The bag/buckets are filled with water while in the back of the SUV.

The main purpose of using the bag as a liner is to prevent water spillage
while bouncing around during the 100-300 yard transport at 2 mph to the target location.
The extra size of the bag allows it to be tied off snugly at the top.

Bouncing around with too much water will cause the water in the loose bag
to flop over the top of the bucket like a sitting big man's belly hangs over his belt.
A bag tied too loosely might then allow water spillage.

During the short, bouncy drive to the target, too much accelerator or too much brakes
will cause unsecured buckets to topple over.

At the target location, the buckets are placed on a blue tarp
and aligned with the shooting bench. Sometimes a bullet will
have enough energy to exit the second bucket but not enough energy
to enter the third bucket. Without the tarp, the bullet would fall in the grass
and not be found until run over with a lawn mower.

It is helpful to place a paper target next to the water buckets
to first verify windage and bullet drop before taking the longer range shot
at the water buckets.

13 inches of water before hitting plastic isn't really enough.
When the tested rifle bullets expanded at 100 yards, they were usually found in the second bucket.
With only an opening in the first bucket, the bullets had to pass through
two .10 inch plastic bucket walls to reach the water inside the second bucket.
The jackets of some expanded bullets were still found mangled in the second bucket.

I'm working on a two bucket set up (front and rear openings on first bucket,
front only opening in the second bucket) with a third unmodified bucket
in line to back up the first two.

Plastic buckets are a pain to cut. For shooting gelatin in a bucket,
if one block is sufficient, it might work to place the bucket on it's side
to use the open top instead of cutting a hole in the bucket.

Likewise, if two gelatin blocks are needed, it might work to cut an opening in the bottom
of the first bucket, and then place that open top/bottom bucket on it's side in front of
the open top of the second bucket of gelatin placed on it's side.

For a source of squarie-ish buckets, Tidy Cats Light Weight kitty litter comes in
nice sized 17lb rectangular plastic buckets. My friend's cat loving wife started collecting
them for me.

I can't wait for the rain to stop. :)
