Has anyone ever used LRN not LRNFP?
Have a match to shoot tomorrow and find I am 20 rounds of LRNFP short. I've been using a buddys press and can't get to it in time.
I've always heard to use flat point ammo ONLY in a lever gun. Is the dreaded "chain-fire" REALLY a danger with regular round nose lead?
I've been shooting lever guns since '03 but have never questioned this.
If its true, then I've got to try and find some LRNFP(not easy when you have time) today.
HELP!

I didn't come with any spare parts so I wouldn't be betting my eyes and fingers or life on round nose ammo not initiating a chain fire in a tube magazine firearm.Ninety Caliber wrote:Has anyone ever used LRN not LRNFP?

My eyes ain't much but they're the only pair I got so nothing but large cavity HPs, FNs or FTXs in my leverguns.
The 454 Casull or any other cartridge taking SP or SR primers would be less risky with RNs but I personally still wouldn't chance it.
Up to you !

Good evening
Take a file and file the nose flat. You can do a visual comparrison and shoot away.

Ideal, then Lyman, has been marketing a RN 30-30 bullet for years.
Looks like this – I
I used to borrow a mould from a friend so I shot lots of these downrange from various leverguns. Here is Lyman's description of this bullet and its usage.
Bullet # : 311291 (Gas Check)
Grain: 170gr
Top Punch : 465
Double Cavity # : 2660291
Designed many years ago. Shoots extremely well in most 30 cal cartridges, 30-30, 30-06, etc
