Savage 99 ~ 300 Savage

Post by Ranch Dog »

It is time to post the pictures of the latest newcomer to the ranch! A Savage 99 chambered in 300 Savage. I purchased it from Williams Gun Sight Co. The rifle was manufactured in 1937 or '38. It came with the Weaver K3.

Now that is a good picture of a sleek looking lever action. I have no hands on with the 99. It looks good.

I had one in .243...............some years back I foolishly traded it off.

Might be a 308 Win? The 99 is a short action.

In thinking about Long Ranger, I wonder how many other fellows that have been interested in them have gone to or back to the 99? There are over a million rifles out there and 243 & 308 Wins are going to cost about 70 to 80% of the Henry.

That is a mighty fine rifle. My EG is a bit earlier vintage, and isn't nearly as clean and nice.

I agree that a lot of modern levergunners would be happy with a .308/.300 Savage/.243, but the 99 does have one drawback. It's challenging to scope with compact modern scopes. You made a good find with the K3. Try getting the same eye relief with any scope that's available today. I'm going to run a Bushnell Banner muzzle loader scope with 6 inches of eye relief. Your's has a very nice one piece scope base, too. I'm using Weaver bases, but my rings have been on backorder since November 4.

I put a Weaver Classic V 2-7x32 on my 99E 308 Win, no problem with the eye relief using the Weaver two-piece bases.
