I went with the Rossi because I had looked at several different Marlins at a LGS that carries a large stock of them. I didn't see even one of any model I would have taken the chance on.
The return to Davidson is the way to go.

I think it I wanted a trouble free big bore levergun I would buy myself a Pedersoli 86/71 444 Marlin and be done with it.

RG4570 Non-Marlin Replacements

I'm a big fan of the 1886, but if you are going there why .444 instead of .45-70?

For my personal needs, it trumps the 45-70 Govt. Within the Pedersoli line I prefer the scout base they use on the 444 Marlin. That is one of the negatives I have with the Rio Grande series, the lack of a scout scope base.

I'm aware of the Stainless rifle but don't care for the finish on a rifle that I'm hunting with. Even though it has a scout mount I would still take the 444 Marlin for my needs. Also, don't care for the camo film on the Walnut stock. That would last about three minutes in the South Texas brush.

I've oohed and aahed over these rifles for some time but just haven't bitten for some reason. Here are all of them.

Think you forgot these couple I was drooling over earlier today:

My Winchester is sort of like the plain jane version of the Sporting, except mine's the takedown.

In response to a forum member discussing the return of his RG4570 to Davidson's, I started ramblings about maybe a Pedersoli. In fitting with "The Rules", this should be a stand alone topic.

How are these rifles priced?

Don't know, pulled the pics off Pedersoli's webpage.
http://www.davide-pedersoli.com/scheda- ... rifle.html
http://www.davide-pedersoli.com/scheda- ... emium.html
The Sporting Rifle like the SS one caught my eye in the What's New page. The Special was on the 86/71 page second from the top.

Looks to me like the other guns are listing around $1800-2000 from Cimarron's website. I'd expect the color case hardened receiver to be a bump and another for the octagonal. EMF lists 1 Pedersoli 86/71 and it looks like the basic blue model at $1800+. The other 86/71 they list is Chiappa at about three hundred less but also out of stock. (plus although it is listed as fancy octagonal and color case hardened finish it is straight stocked and unchecked.)

That'd put them well above the going rate for the Winchester 1886's from Japan on the auction sites unless your looking at the listings from the crack smokers. (I found the GunBroker listing for the unfired 1886 ExtraLite interesting. IME it is highly unusual for anyone to exchange the sights on even a Japanese Winchester paying for and installing a Lyman globe front and a Lyman receiver sight which I think requires drilling and tapping without ever shooting the gun before or after. Also calling a Lyman globe site a 'combat' front sight seems to stretch things as well.) I going rate on the Winchesters was around $1400+ back when they were reaching the shelves pretty often. List might have been $1600+?

Don't appear to be many of the Pedersoli 86/71 guns listed anywhere used or new. Checked on GunBroker, GunAuction and Cherry's looking for active auctions.
Did find one 'semi-deluxe' on GunBroker for B.I.N.@ $1300 listed as 99%. Looked like the Special I posted without the checkering. http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewIt ... =481596811

Cherry's didn't have any Pedersoli 86/71 levers in auctions but lists the standard 86/71 as Special order only at $1600. I'd bet they'd be willing to try to get the other models but I wouldn't want to bet on the prices or turnaround time assuming they could make it happen.

The quote I received from Cherry's for the 444 was $1625 several years ago.

Cherry's isn't exactly inexpensive but one of my buds through another board has done quite a bit of business with them from time to time with good results.
