I'm Now a Rossi Revolverman!

Post by Ranch Dog »

It is official, a Rossi 351 (R35102) has joined the ranks of Taurus conceal carry revolvers I own! This is the little 2" barreled, 5-shot, 38 Spl +P.

There is a fellow that has been giving me 38 Spl +P cases for almost two years now. By weight I figured I have 5K worth of them. I guess I could have tried to sell them but that seems stupid, better to buy a gun to go with them. It will be a few weeks before I start shooting it, I won't receive my Lee TL358-158-SWC until next week sometime so about the second week of April I will start on it.

The MRSP is $401. Academy, a Gulf Coast chain, sells them for $279 but with Texas sales tax out the door is $303. I bought mine off of GunBroker with a max bid of $303. I'm out $20 USPS Priority Mail shipping and $20 FFL fee but that is less than the fuel to drive to Houston to see if Academy has any there. There are none at their stores in South Texas.

My FFL tried to get me one but there are none in the distributor network. Like anything else right now, the distributors are out and what is out there is sitting in a display case at a local dealer. The only dealers with them seem to be Davdison's dealers which is good for the return if necessary.

I do not like buying firearms from Academy, despite the prices, it is a weird setup and more like buying them online as you cannot open the actions which are secured with tie wraps that are removed after the purchase as you are escorted out of the store. You can look at the finish is about all you get. Once you pay for it, it is yours with no return to Academy. Like I said the price looks good but I'd rather buy from a Davidson's dealer with their warranty/refund policy.

The escort out the store is really weird to. They hold the firearm to the front door. Never mind that I'm conceal carrying a 45 ACP during the purchase or when I go in to buy my granddaughter base balls or fishing lures. Nutty!

Well thats a nice price, will be interested in your overall assessment..
As for the tie wraps and escort out the door that is weird, like we are committing some form of quasi illegal act or are automatically profiled as a cook just because we are buying a gun! Have we really gotten so far removed from general society in just a few decades?? . I have had the escort done here in AK with me on a couple occasions but was pleased to see the last time at our Fred Meyer dept store they just handed my Ruger 44 mag to me to stick in my shopping cart! I guess the tie wrap and thus no real inspection/refund at the store policy is just part of the price we "pay" for getting the discount from the larger outlets. As for the store policies and the legalities, I can understand a large corporation such as Walmart wanting the assurance of locks on the guns until sold as it just takes just one crazy to stuff a loaded round in one of their 1000's of stores for them to be sued as well as targeted with every news corp out there for days and days of 24 hour news ad nauseam. To me it would seem that once the transaction takes place, the papers are signed and the phone call has been placed and money exchanged their legal responsibility for that gun is no longer theirs so the escort to the car is nutty at that point, at least from my perspective.

Well, the 351 is on the ranch! At the shop, everything checked out. This handgun is little. Look the size compared to my Uniball pen, wish I would laid it beside it as a reference.

Now just waiting on the bullet mold.

I have been wanting a little 38/ 357 for a while now. Looks like a very nice addition to the collection. I am making a holster for my father in law's ruger of similar design now and I am getting a little revolver envy :) . Ranch dog, Is the policy at Academy with the tie wraps and not being able to check out a firearm before purchase a new thing chain wide or a regional/ county ordinance? I bought my TCP from academy a little while ago here near Austin and I think they would have let me field strip it in the store if I had asked. I was able to cycle it, check the action, check the magazines, etc, etc with nothing but encouragement from the sales person.

Many more guns, reloading equipment, etc etc.

I'm not sure. I bought a 308ME from an Academy in Houston and a Glock 26 from the one in Victoria and it was handled exactly the same. I have looked at firearms at the Victoria counter and it is always the same and I always see individuals escorted out of the store under this policy. It has prevented my from buying firearms from them throughout the years. I generally buy at least 6 firearms a year, at least, and they do have good prices but...

I typically buy from Hunter Supply in Victoria, a very short distance from Academy. I've been dealing with Larry for three years now and he has handled all of my Taurus/Rossi purchases either directly or as my FFL. He has also sold about 20 of my Marlins for me. He has always matched any deal that Academy has on the same product so it makes it easy for me.

Here is the Rossi saddled up in a Ross Leather J2 slide. The 351 is almost identical to my Taurus 605, they actually weigh the same at 23 oz. The only difference is the cylinder length, a true 38 Spl, which is that silly .040" shorter than the .357 Mag and the 351 has the hammer nose. I will be able to use my Max-Fire speed loaders so life is good so far!
