Heavy 45/70 Loads

Postby bigpete » 26 Apr 2017 04

So I've just ordered a new Rossi Rio Grande in 45/70 from my local gunship here in South Australia. One play with it and I was hooked ! Smooth as silk lever cycling, decent trigger pull, and it fits me like a glove !
Now half the reason I decided to buy it was because I want a backup gun for a muzzleloader/longbow water buffalo hunt I'm going on. So I'm planning on reloading with very heavy projectiles. I have on offer a Cast Bullet Engineering 570gn .458 bullet mold I'd like to try,and I'm just curious if anyone here has tried loading such a heavy bullet in their Rio Grande at all ? And is there any problems with them that I should look out for ?
Cheers,Pete

As long as the bullet was designed with a leveraction cartridge overall length considerations in mind, there would be any issues with it. Usually, you can tell by the nose, it cannot be much more than .45" (11.43mm) long. Nose profile plays into this a bit but the cartridge needs to make it up the carrier and into the chamber at a pretty good angle.

I've used the Beartooth 525-grain Pile Driver in my RG4570. At .458" it cycled very well and was very accurate.
