.45-70 barrel observation

Postby Arroyoshark » 29 Aug 2016 16

I had not before noticed this, but when I was cleaning the RG .45-70 today and looked down the barrel to check its cleanliness and observed something I had not seen in carbine barrels before. The rifling stops , perhaps 1/4", from the crown at the muzzle. It is smooth bore at the muzzle.

I wonder if mine is an anomaly, or a regular manufacturing thing. I don't know of either a downside or an upside to this, but I have not seen this in production barrels.

Has anyone else observed this ?

Doesn't sound correct even if they're all like that.

Definitely seems like an extra and unnecessary procedure in my opinion.

I've heard of recessing the crown or rifling but I've not seen it more or less petering out.

Built in false muzzle ;) Shouldn't have to worry too much about cleaning rod wear on the muzzle.

My RG4570B is rifled right up to the crown.

My 45 70 is also rifled to the crown, no counter bore like the Nagants are now.
