I was doing a little Wikipedia-ing----- i noticed a rifled shotgun slug hits 1700- 1800 fps for a 400 grain projectile. 45/70 same vel. for a 405 (well, faster if you'd like) The only thing is a slug is 70 caliber for a 12 guage.
I had a rem 1100 one time that would shoot rifled slugs into a 5" group at 100 yards. Turn deer inside- out too.
Just an observation that struck me as intresting. I was curious.

Re: 45/70 vs rifled shotgun slug
I think, could be wrong, that most shotgun slugs are a bit on the soft side compared to the slugs that come out of a .45-70...

Re: 45/70 vs rifled shotgun slug
Slug guns have come a long way. The main issue with slugs of any flavor is that start to run out of steam quickly beyond 100 yards. Given the diameter of a slug, it is just hard to compare to a projectile with an ogive to the nose.
