Rio Grand 45-70 picanntany rail

Is it ok to remove the accessory rail on the top of the rifle ? Should those screw holes be covered up with somthing. Any thoughts?

1) Shouldn't cause a problem
2) plug screws can be installed as long as they don't protrude through the receiver and bear on the bolt.

Assuming of course you can get the plugs.
I'm still looking on and off for some for a rifle I removed a crap scope off of almost a year ago.

The screws are 6-48s. Skinner Sights sells them in pairs for a dollar, blued or SS. Just page down on the linked page.

Technically, the scope base isn't a picatinny rail, its a Weaver Base which is different. You are removing it but I thought I would point this out in case the subject comes up in a future search. Some stuff that needs a rail will not fit on a Weaver base.

Remove it now. See if you can find screws to fill holes.
