New 45-70

Post by lovetohunt »

Hello all. I won a Rio Grande 45-70 at a local sportsman's club raffle. I have always wanted a 45-70 but could never "justify" buying one. I have disassembled, cleaned and polished the internals. I have bought 2 boxes of ammo to try, Hornady lever evolution, and HSM bear load. What ammo do you all recommend? This will rifle will be used mostly on pesky water jugs and card board boxes, but I will deer hunt with it this fall.

Is there anything else I should know or do before shooting this rifle. I joined this site and have read throught this forum, I'm just looking for as much infomation as possible.

Welcome to the forum lovetohunt, really nice to know someone who won something like a RG4570! Those water jugs might be pesky but they are relatively easy to take down so I would say the cheaper the better.

I won a Savage last year.
Took me by surprise in a big way.

Always nice when you win something you like and can use.

Believe me, I was verry suprised when I won. I shot it today and all I can say is wow! It has some stout recoil. The Hornaday wasn't bad, but the HSM bear load was a handfull. I see that it is +p rated. I believe it. Other than my shoulder, will shooting +p loads cause problems. I don't see myself shooting many of them.
