New here from SC with a problem already.

Post by fordemti »

Hello all. Nice to meet you. Just to let you know, I'm not new to firearms. Have been shooting and collecting for the better part of 20 years now. I picked up a Ranch Hand in 45 Colt 2 months ago from Gunbroker. Got it in and the collar for the ejector lever was completely missing as well as the pin for the safety. Not terribly happy about that but I've since ordered the parts and replaced them. Anyway, the gun will not feed from the mag tube. At all. It's like the shell holder isn't moving over far enough to allow the rounds to eject from the mag tube. Rossi denied my claim at first because I didn't have the receipt from the dealer I bought it from online. I have since gotten a receipt but am waiting to hear if Braztech will "accept" it. How awfully sweet of them. Has anyone else had this issue? And if so, how were you able to fix it? Thanks and I'm glad to be here!! And just so you know I'm not a Rossi hater, I also own a 92 in stainless steel and 45 Colt as well with a 20" round barrel that I absolutely love. It works without issue. But it's older and doesn't have the Taurus security crap on it.

Rossi/Braztec quality control is pretty spotty. It's gotten better the last couple years, but as a general rule if I am buying a Rossi 92 I go equipped with commercial aluminum dummy rounds to at least get a ball park read on feed and functioning.

The local guns shops I've worked with have TOTALLY understood as the majority of the firearms they have to return are Rossi/Taurus/Braztec firearms, and so far none of them have objected to loading up with dummy rounds.

First question I have is have you completely flushed the action with non-chlorinated brake cleaner?

I think your reference of the "shell holder" is the actually the Cartridge Stop (45). The Cartridge Stop Spring (47) is what keeps it extended. You should be able to reach in with a small slotted screwdriver and flex it towards the side of the receiver. If not, the Spring is probably install wrong or some bit of trash is behind the Stop and will not let it retract. If it is trash, flushing might remove it. If not, you will need to tear down the receiver to remove the Stop to figure it out.

Maybe the Safety's missing Locking Pin (did you find the Locking Ball?) or debri from the Ejector Collar made its way behind the Cartridge Stop?

My dad and I tore it all the way down. Comparing it to my, according to Rossi, older R92, the cartridge stop didn't move back and forth as much. So we lightly filed a small amount of material off to give it a little more movement. Still no luck. It's like whatever hits the cartridge stop(I assume the bolt) isn't long enough and isn't making enough contact. Tried just swapping bolts to see if that would work but it's a no go. Won't even fit in the receiver.

The cartridges do not have a "stop" while the bolt is closed, they should move forward, like when you load through the Spring Cover (C), and slide back on magazine spring pressure. The actual "Stop" is the block on the aft end of the carrier. That is the only stop until the carrier snaps up with lever movement. So, when you open your bolt partially (bolt & lever not fully open), is there a cartridge laying on the carrier below?

If the cartridges aren't back under the bolt, got to start looking at the magazine tube and its parts. I have seen people add a magazine follower than wasn't specifically designed for the R92 and cartridge, and this happens as the plug isn't fitting the receiver port properly. Same with the plastic yellow Rossi follower. Something might have happened to it where it is out of round or worn.

I'm going to be out most of the day, hopefully others will lend a hand.

R.D. has covered most I think that can be addressed for this. Also is the cartridge stop sill retain it's spring? If spring is put in backwards then it can cause issues as well. I'm just brain storing keep us posted +corn

Well, I don't know what is wrong. Spring is correctly placed. Mag tube, spring and follower are all fine. It has a brand new Steve Gunz follower and stainless spring. Anyway, Rossi finally decided the receipt I managed to get from the GB seller is sufficient enough for them to repair it. So it is off to them. I shipped it out today. Hopefully I know something soon. Does anyone know how long it takes for them to even touch the guns that come in for repair?

I will do it. Hopefully it won't be long. I never even got to shoot it.

That is pretty much all over the map. From these pages I've seen them returned in a week and then there are others that have been out near a year. In that your Ranch Hand is still in production, I suspect it will be three weeks but that is just a guess.
