Rossi RH .45 Colt versus .45 Long Colt

Post by nkuriger »

The website has two versions, rh92-57121 .45 Colt and rh92-57203 .45 Long Colt. I recently bought a used 57121. What is the difference? Does anyone know? Here is the product page http://www.rossiusa.com/product-list.cfm?category=17

It would appear that one has the "case hardened" finish.

Any R92, Ranch Hand or Rifle, identified as "XX203"; has a case hardened receiver.

Not sure why the web page reference uses 45LC. If you click on the product, the description text uses 45 Colt. The catalog specs use 45 Colt as does the roll stamp on the barrel.

45 Long Colt somehow slipped into the gun writers' vocabulary. As far as I know the correct term for the cartridge is 45 Colt. In some of the early Colt cartridges there were both long and short versions, but so far as I know the 45 wasn't one of them, but the terminology survives and soldiers on even with some ammo makers.

Looking forward to reports on the Ranch Hand.

Well, I stand corrected  . There was a shorter version of the 45 Colt, not as the 45 Short Colt but as the 45 Colt Government.

Here's a link to a short article: www.leverguns.com/articles/taylor/45_short_colt.htm
Interesting reading.

I hate the word short no matter what ammo makers print on their boxes. Some are willing to die on that hill. I won't but will call it .45C or .45 Colt, never .45LC or use the word long. Just me.

I've had people who are fairly familiar with firearms get confused when I talk about my .45 Colt and immediately think I'm talking about a Colt 1911 is a .45 cal. Even one friend who reloads .45 ACP's started giving me his pet loads for that caliber when I mentioned reloading for my .45 Colt. And he should have known better. I think if had referred to it as a .45 Long Colt there would have been no confusion at all.

I think the Long Colt name may date back to the time Uncle Sam issued revolvers in .45 Schofield and .45 Colt ( the Peacemaker ) . The Peacemaker would chamber either one . The Schofield , only the shorter caliber .

The term Long Colt probably was used to help make the ammo issue less confusing .

I have read , the Army phased out the Schofield , partly to make ammo logistics simpler . And they were able to use up any remaining .45 Schofield ammo in the Peacemakers .

Anyway , that is what I have read .

God bless
