If I had to say a TV show influenced me to get it, it will not be The Rifleman as I've never heard of it until a few months ago. Instead, it would be Firefly

Right. I'm a fan of Dr. Who as well.

Firefly is a great show. One of my other favorites, the Beretta CX4, makes an appearance, also.

Sorry to dig up an older post but id just like to add the question, practically speaking what advantages does a 'mares leg' of any type have over a full size, long barrel revolver especially something like Taurus 608 with its 8 round capacity? Cool factor aside of course -- We all know a short lever wins all the style points

Im talking about use as a defensive weapon in the woods in black bear or charging moose country in New England.

The big advantage is the forend grip, I'd say. More control, especially with larger calibers. And when the bullets are gone, it's a better club.

For us Canadians it is hard to get a permit to allow wilderness carry of a pistol
The ranch hand is classified as a rifle up here so we can carry it no problem
Many like myself put a full stock on it and create a light weight camping/hiking gun

I saw a vid about that and converting one to a Short Barreled Rifle, but id have to check on the law regarding that here in FL where i live. Thankfully/hopefully soon ill be moving to VT with a new job :)

As far I know, here in the U.S. you cannot alter the lenght in any way, by adding a full stock to a ranch hand. I believe it is an ATF Law (rule,?).
The same applies to the Rossi "Circuit Judge" , by making it shorter.
More knowledgeable people than I might chime in.

Florida law is murky on it. First SBR's are defined as: (11) “Short-barreled rifle” means a rifle having one or more barrels less than 16 inches in length and any weapon made from a rifle (whether by alteration, modification, or otherwise) if such weapon as modified has an overall length of less than 26 inches. (Source FL statutes section 790)

Later under section 790.221 it reads that possession thereof is illegal and a second degree felony -however- item 3 reads: (3) Firearms in violation hereof which are lawfully owned and possessed under provisions of federal law are excepted.

Which to me reads as if theyre saying "theyre illegal unless the Feds say it's okay then we're cool"

In any case thos is just for tour own edification since its a moot point for me as i intend to keep it the way it os. I already jave a 20" and intend to buy a 16" for wifey.

The bug, it has bitten me!
